  • well done what a great start to the year, we have the Barclays reg saver also it's a good rate in comparison to others that are available, and believe me I've been looking, I know you can get a first direct savings account for something like 8% but you have to open a current account I think?? but I don't want all of the hassle of changing my current account over I'm happy with the rate Barclays pay.

I need to add an extra £130 to my savings as I got a refund from Easyjet paid in yesterday (I've been waiting for a month for it!!!) anyway that's going straight into the reg saver.
Regular saver £200 Saving for emergency fund (£2000)
ISA £30 Saving for new clothes/ new laptop (£1000)

Yes, you do need the 1st Direct Current Account if you want access to the 8% Reg Saver.

No, you do not have to move your existing current account. Only thing you need in there is the monthly deposit for the Regular Saver, in time for the Standing Order.

Just do a bit more research. Seems a crying shame to settle for 3.2% when you can get 8.

As an aside, a complete list of Regular Savings accounts is in the first few posts of this thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/608697

You cant withdraw money from that account unless you take out the full amount though, also I'd rather not have the extra credit check to be honest.

On a separate note how do you set up the standing order for the Barclays Regular Saver? It wont let me do it on online banking :@ I have had to order a telephone passcode which is intensely annoying and wont be here for a week. Might go into my local branch to get them to sort it but I hope I can change the amount online as I will be paying in the full £250 for the first few months but might not be able to keep this up.

You need to set up the standing order through the online banking for the bank sending the payment.

You won't be able to set it up through Barclays online banking.

It's easy to set up a standing order using Barclays online banking
Log in and go right to the bottom of the page and below 'Set up a standing order' choose 'To an account in the UK' or 'Between your own accounts'

If you want to change the amount from time to time go right to the bottom of the page again and below 'Manage payments & transfers' choose 'Standing orders, direct debits, future payments & transfers'

lawstudent needs to set up a standing order to a Barclays account - the instructions you have given apply if they were setting up one from a Barclays account.

It is actually from a Barclays account to a Barclays account.

Even having said this I dont think anyone understands the problem. I have attached a picture. You will notice that I cannot select my savings account to transfer to and the help box on the side says something about adding this to the list. However when I called Barclays said you can only manage the standing order for this account in branch or with telephone banking.

The Barclays website does say you can manage the Monthly Saver account online... am I missing something?

Interestingly I can set up a standing order send money out of the savings account :(

  • I've just applied for a dart tag which will save me 67p every time I travel to and from uni (I return home every weekend to work) so this saving will go towards my savings fund. Also very convenient as this means:

    1. I dont have to have cash on me
    2. I get through the traffic quicker
    3. I can earn cashback on this - specifically I have to make 15 transactions a month on my card to get a better rate so even if its a small top up this will help.

lawstudent you may have a point, year before last I used to fund my reg. saver manually every month but when they introduced the new online site I couldn't choose it as the 'to' account in the usual transfer funds dialog

I now recall I had to set up the SO via telephone banking but I am pretty sure that you can still alter the amounts once it is set up
    Apologies

Very pleased to be beginning 2013 with no debt apart from the mortgage and savings started. Paid off £8,300 worth of debt this year and now have £2,500 in my emergency fund. Planning on building up my emergency fund, then have to decide whether to pay off mortgage or save or a balance between the two. I now know I can put about £1000 a month away consistently. What a difference from last year!
