Not checked into this thread for ages. I have a question and also I'll give a summary.

    Summary of my progress:

The outgoings during 2009: Had circa £30K at the beginning of the year, but £10K went on conservatory, £2K on furniture and blinds etc, £4K on supplementing SAHM
this leaves about £14K in that pot (and decreasing slowly)... now decided that this money is spoken for to keep my wife at home with the kids for at least another year to 18 months.

Aside to this pot, I have accumulated £11K through maturing SAYE scheme.
I save £100/month into partnership shares
I save £150/month into SAYE scheme
I get roughly £1500 of shares/year as part of my bonus at work (currently £3K available but taxable - held in trust)

So a big reliance on share schemes for me.

Question: has anyone invested in Wine? I have been contacted by an investment company that has informed me of investments in wine, whereby the appreciation of the value in the bottles held is how money is made. This is a really alternative for me and even though I am interested, I want to just ask the question.. may even start a thread to get some advice.

I'd be very careful and do lots of research before dabbling with wine. Besides you'd only drink the profits :D

If the investment company have contacted you then i doubt that would be the way to make money from it or they would be investing in it rather than selling. :money:

the bottles are purchased on the customers behalf and held by the investment company, they earn on commission of proceeds achieved by the future sale. The company in question is:
    http://www.sealewines.com
the actual cases purchased in the investment are premium and the investment involves the appreciating price of the case over time.

To me this is really out there and is not something I would normally consider. But I have seen press comment about this and there is money to be made. Really keen to find others who have taken a plunge into this type of investment.. (at the moment, I get the vibes of calculated gamble, rather than using the word investment though). Drinking the profits sounds like a good idea though if it goes pear-shaped.. quite partial to a bit of red now and again.

I've never looked at wine, but over the years I've collected a lot of rare books - modern first editions - and reckon my collection is worth in the region of £20-25,000 now. They probably cost under £800 to accumulate.
  • I managed to put some extra money away from last month which was a good feeling.
So i added £200 from this months (last months?) wages and the extra £50 left over at the end of last month. YAY!
If I keep that up (note the if) I should hit my goal sooner that I thought!
  • Wahey, I've done some overtime! It's been a while, but I should get 6.5 hours at time and a half at the end of September, which will help me reach my goals.

    :)

Well done to everyone, I am always inspired to read about your progress, especially the newbies. Keep on trucking!

I've got almost £28,000 so far, and Sept should be a cheap enough month even with a lil' city break coming up (just been away too :o - but that is my vice, and money well spent). If I didn't travel so much I'd easily save a lot more than £10,000 a year but I would be miserable. :A October is going to be more expensive but very exotic!

What are you saving for Tara? I do it for security really, and possibly the next house move (that actually might not happen - we love where we live even though it is getting too small)
  • Interesting thread, I have just started a new job but am concerned about setting up regular saving.

Did read through some of the posts but more looking for amounts say what sort of percentage of wages goes too savings?

Got a grand on a 0% credit card I need to clear but after that I really want to start putting money away....

Started the ball rolling with a £100 a month in Premium Bonds
