Its a good idea, but how much is it really going to save us with interest rates so shockingly low?

It might not be a fortune but its more money in our pockets. I have a good bit of savings in my accounts so it might be a good few hundred on the highest market rates available.
Had £80,000 in Savings - All GONE!!! BYE BYE

  • I have to buy a new car as mine has died :(
gutted I have to use my savings but glad I started saving or i'd have to get a loan.
    Happy new year :)
  • IMO...the best way to save money is to STOP overspending....buy things that are for necessity not for luxury...and i think to save money we should at least limit our debts especially that credit card thing!!!

Nice to see you again Lucy, you have a good Christmas?

Thank you, I had a lovely Christmas and New Year - how about you?

Updated my signature! December was a bumper month, and I think January will follow suit! (I hope so, anyway). I am pretty much at a third of my target, which is great.

I want to hit 40% by the end of April, which I know is feasible, but I hope I'll exceed this.. I'm trying to not take it for granted that my situation in April will be as it is now... who knows what the next year will bring. I hope to still be employed, at any case!

thanks for the advice but for somebody like myself or dazcouz its not really worth the hassle because we would only end up wasting a good bit of money.

I like the tories idea of abolishing tax on the interest on our savings.

LOL, do what I did and ban yourself from all the betting websites just to make sure you don't relapse.:money:

    Couple of general questions:
Is anyone in this thread making any big changes - like switching from mainly saving to mainly overpaying the mortgage because savings accounts interests rates are beginning to get so low? or are people keeping their cash available because of uncertainty ahead in terms of job security and recession?

Personally, I want to keep my cash accessible so I can get at it if/when I need to, especially as I'm freelance and my income tends to fluctuate quite wildly from month to month. I don't have a mortgage so I don't have that to think about thankfully!

  • I want to set myself a tough challenge for 2009, but I just don't have any decent ideas. It's not enough for me to just say "I want to have saved £x by the end of the year".

Last year I half heartedly attempted to live on 4K, and managed to live on about 6K... Which I didn't think was too bad. But now I'm feeling uninspired. Has anyone seen any interesting ideas floating about for 2009?
