May I have a look at that spreadsheet too? It sounds really good.

And I am needing some inspiration on the spreadsheet front right now...

  • I never really knew what I was saving for so thanks to this post I've decided

-deposit for when I get my first house.

Maybe this will spur me on and stop me spending :)

How much is an average deposit? or how much should I aim for?
  • That's a bit of "how long is a piece of string". For the foreseable future you will need 10% of the house value to obtain a reasonable mortgage rate. This could have completely changed in a years time though!

House prices look set to fall further so how much are the houses you'd be willing to move into cost now, keep an eye on their prices, as they rise/fall that will tell you what you need as a deposit.
  • Thanks for that Lucythe Dwarf. I have been putting aside a set amount for 'clothing' but I like your idea of being more specific. Much better:)

  • I feel a new coat and boots are a yearly necessity! I could wear last year's... but I feel so much smarter in a new one, and I deserve to treat myself for the year's savings :D

I've decided to change my signature to show 3 goal percentages instead of my ultimate goal and percentage as it was way too depressing seeing it change so slowly. This way I feel it seems easier to achieve (but still probably impossible  )

  • Hi,
What is the Olympic Challenge / Olympic calculator?
  • It is a spreadsheet that was around about a year ago, shows your 'disposable' monthly income x 12, and then offesets your savings per month into the disposable, to show what % of that you put into wages for that year (or something like that).
