Definitely get a weekly bus ticket, if you want to get around the island the main bus stops for lots of places are about 200 yards fron the waterfront hotel. Valleta takes about 15 mins from there.

Hi and thanks to all for replies.I was looking at The Waterfront hotel in Sliema. It has good reviews and is only £124 b&b for 4nts.Like the look of either Sliema or St Julians as they are close to Valletta.Looking forward to it- never been to the Med in mid winter before so will be prepared for all weather!.

    Cheers....Neil

If you stay at the Waterfront you might want to visit Cafe Jubilee, a 2 min walk away. It's a bar with good food and is popular with locals. They have free snacks at the bar and free wifi:

Buses run from outside the Waterfront to Valletta every few minutes (47 cents). But if you walk to Sliema (10 minutes away) you can catch a ferry from opposite Marks and Spencer. The ferry to Valletta takes 10 minutes and costs €1.50 each way.

It's worth knowing that Valletta falls quiet in the evenings. After dark there's much more life in Sliema and St Julians.

Would recommend St Julian's. Have family living out there so we go every few months. Best hotel in our opinion is the Hilton although I do realise it is expensive unless you manage to get one of the deals sometimes offered by the group over here. It does get breezy over there on the sea front but it's lovely. Weather atm is really nice according to dil.

No they are not the same. They are both owned by the same company and are adjacent to each other, but the FS is a 5 star hotel with a separate bar, and a more generous all-inc package which includes a la carte at the individual restaurants.

The Fortina is 4 star, looking a little jaded, and the all-inc package varies, but most companies include the table d'hote menu of the individual restaurants in the all-inc. I hear that the buffet restaurant had a complete refurb last year too.

It is also worth checking out the hotel's own website for deals, and then giving them a ring, as you can often negotiate with them at this time of year.

The buses are a bit of a joke.

Enjoy the old jalopies while you can. They're being replaced in July with swish air conditioned ones and some of the bendy buses London no longer wants.

Huge thanks for pointing this out, the more I hear about the hotel and the timeshare presence I changing my mind. The Victoria Hotel has now entered my shortlist :)
