Life seems to be getting more and more expensive here.
It looks like a washing machine replacement is on the cards. Can't really complain though as the current one has done about 15 years with only one repair needed about 8 years ago.
It may be viable to repair it.
For things like this I do tend to get the manufacturer out. So it's a costly repair/call out charge. However, if it's unviable to repair, I do get most of it back so long as I put it towards one of their own models.
I know that it's possible to get a third party to take a look etc. and probably save some money. However, I do want to be sure that things are done the right way because I live in a flat and any mistakes could lead to water problems. That's the main reason I won't go to freecycle for a machine because you can never be certain that it won't leak.
If I were on the ground floor or had a separate utility room I would chance my arm with second hand machines.
I just seem to keep patching things up over and over here.
There comes a point when the plastic has to come out and sort things out properly. I dislike it but that's how it goes sometimes.
One thing I will do though (if I need to buy a new one) is to dispense with a built in tumble dryer and look for a higher spin speed instead (current spin speed is 1,000). That should save some money on the appliance.
I do have a drying cupboard that works OK as it has a water tank in it. I suppose a combi boiler would be cheaper to run but it would cost to set up and I would lose my drying cupboard facility.
So probably better to leave that as it is.
Life feels harder lately even though my outgoings are lower than a couple of years ago.0 -
Back with another £30.69 to the VSP.
Hope you get your washing machine sorted Paul. Mine spins @ 1400 which is great, stuff dries on the airer quite quickly.I myself am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions...0 -

I'm glad to hear it. Although 1400 spin cycle does seem to attract a higher price, machines seem to be a lot more energy efficient than when I bought my current one. I will have to splash out on a launderette visit over the weekend as I don't want it all building up.
For anyone who may doubt my frugality, I still have the same gas cooker that I bought just after moving in here in 1987. It only cost about £200 back then and I paid nearly £100 to fix it a couple of years back. Even now the igniter no longer works (battery change didn't fix it) so I bought a couple of those hand held igniters from Asda for a pound or so each.
The way this is going I'll end up living in a tent with a Calor gas container.
I have considered a home on wheels but I imagine the police would hassle me too much. I can see why travellers stay in groups.0 -
