But you can afford the cost of car hire and all of the fuel to get to Vegas and back to LA which would cost more than the £228 you are saving on flights (assuming there are 2 of you and you would not have hired a car in Vegas anyway)

really? that much? i didn't realise.. its more my girlfriend wants to goto LA/Cali. but las vegas isn't too far so any excuse to go back really.

i'm still kicking myself about not booking direct flights when they were £412. what a fool :(

Yup youre right.....LAX is direct isnt it :huh: and a three hundred mile drive takes less time than a plane change in Charlotte :huh:

thing is, at least you are able to do stuff in LA and visit other places.

does anyone here fly in-direct to vegas? is it is bad as it sounds/i think its going to be? i suppose it gives you a chance to stretch your legs!

cloudy nines - great trip review, thanks. its giving me the itch to go back.

cloudynines- great TR thanks for taking the time to post.

I also play a little poker and pai gow but not played crazy 4 is it easy to play?

We stayed 1 night at Cosmo on netflight deal and agree best room i've stayed in too! They tried giving us a studio terrace when I'd booked a 1 bed but I also took written confirmation so that was sorted no problem.

I liked the fries at MAG although I love crisps and they are more like crisps than chips!

I have been following this thread for ages, but there is sooo much to take in... I am taking my 14 year old to Vegas in Feb for 1 week during the half term break. I haven't booked a hotel yet, and really would like some ideas. would prob like to stay on the strip and I thought the Mirage might be a good one. Where would be the cheapest place to book this? Or if anyone has any suggestions for other places. Of course we will not be gambling, but will hire a car to go out to Boulder and red Rock. Would like to do the canyon but think we should fly over it, any suggestions there. I appreciate any help or suggestions many thanks MSEr's..

I have taken my boys for the last 3 years (9 and 13yrs this year) we rent a villa as it works better for us but did stay at South Point for a few nights this time. It has bowling, cinema and a small arcade for the kids. They have a shuttle $8 for the day that goes to the strip. Easy with a car as free parking at strip hotels or valet for a tip.
There is also Orleans which is nearer to the strip with a free shuttle and has all of the above for children.
NYNY has a large arcade for kids and the roller coaster, its also close to walk to MGM, gameswork, M&M store, Excalibur (kids arcade and 4d ride).
Mirage is nice but I always think of it as an older persons hotel, I haven't stayed there so can't really give an opinion. It does have the erupting volcano and is near TI with the free show.

My boys really enjoyed the scoot city tour around red rock although they wanted to drive. I think they close for 3 months over winter but start again in Feb and they said they usually do coupons then to get business going again after being closed.

Forgot to say SouthPoint also has a large equestrian centre, they often have different events on. There was some cowboy type stuff going on when we were there and you could wander in free at anytime and stop for as long as you wanted. Its just somewhere else to go other than your room if you're in the hotel and obviously can't hang about the casino.
Steak n Shake is at SP very good, cheap burgers and tasty milkshakes.

We flew with Delta via Atlanta earlier this year (5 of us saving nearly £300 each compared to a direct flight). It was horrendous!

Atlanta airport employs the rudest people on God's earth, barking orders at you like some kind of boot camp at every opportunity. American passengers were getting very riled by them and regularly got argumentative, vowing that a written complaint would be sent to the airport. Horrible atmosphere throughout the airport. We had to walk miles from the arrival terminal to baggage claim where you must collect your luggage, place it on another conveyor belt (orders screamed at you all the while) and then walk miles again and take a train ride to the departure terminal. Such a waste of time. We needed a stiff drink after that and eventually found a bar. The waitress at the doorfront greeted us with a face of complete disdain, as though we were a complete annoyance to her day, and barked 'this way' before we had a chance to even say hello. We followed her like a line of dumb sheep around an empty diner type set-up TWICE before she decided that we should be sat in the far corner where she threw a handful of menus on the table without a word (the grimace was constant). When I told her that we didn't need menus as we only wanted a drink, she rolled her eyes, tutted and sighed in a completely over-exaggerated manner and shouted "well then you can't sit here, go to the bar". This woman had gotten my back right up by now , but as time was a factor, we went to the bar. Imagine our delight when the same woman popped up on the other side of the bar, wearing the same grimace and staring at me. I assumed that this was her way of asking what I would like, without actually saying anything, so I ordered our drinks. She poured them and practically threw them on the bar, one by one, spilling a good deal as she did so, and then barked the total at me (no please). I gave her the exact money, which she examined, then glared at me and shouted "where's my tip?". I glared back and said "It's possibly in the same place as your customer service skills":p. "What? No tip?" she screamed. "What? No smile?" was my response. We pretty much downed our drinks while she glared at us like an angry bear from the end of the bar, and left.

The return journey was not as bad in terms of customer service as we were in a different terminal with a food court. Although, nobody told us that we didn't need to collect our luggage on the return journey, and so we wasted a lot of time trying to find someone who knew what was going on. Atlanta airport employees have no interest in helping passengers whatsoever!

We have no desire to go throughAtlanta ever again.

That said, about 10 years ago I went via Charlotte and that was fine.

    Great trip report!

I agree, the premium view terrace room at the Cosmo is one of the best rooms we have stayed in, and we have stayed at the Bellagio, Caesars and the Encore. We had enough seats in our room to seat 15 people.

Congrats on the slot win too.

We have no choice but to go indirect as there are no direct flights from Aberdeen airport. :) We have to fly to either LHR or Amsterdam before we get started so prefer to opt for the direct with BA from LHR.

However we have gone indirect through Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas, LAX and SFO. We prefer LAX as it gets the worst of the journey over with then we just have a 45 min flight to LAS. Landing at Chicago and realising you still have another 3.5 hour flight is soul destroying although some people like the break.
