another wouldn't bother with LA for a day here.

LAS has a 2-hour rule on departing flights, so you'll have to be at the airport 2 hours before you leave...then the flight...then the faff on the other side (though if you fly into one of the smaller airports like duchy suggested I suppose that this would be less of a pain)...and the same on the return, more or less.

What if the outbound flight is delayed? Would it be worth going?

If it were me and I were dead set on it, I would get up one day really early and drive it I think...though driving around LA isn't my favorite, I know some think it's a breeze. It is compared to London, but the time we drove LA to Vegas I was a bit stressed until we got out of the greater LA area and I grew up driving on the 'wrong' side of the road.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Consider flying into one of the other LA airports like LongBeach and ...oh heck forgotten what the other one is that Jetblue use...help me out someone !.
    Burbank?

A couple of years ago, me and my lad flew from LAS to Burbank (with Southwest) and hired a car. We stayed at the Hilton Universal Studios for one night and managed to cram in a day at the studios, a trip up to the Hollywood sign, Chinese Theatre/ Walk of Fame and a drive through Beverly Hills and down Rodeo Drive.

The best thing was, they made a c**k up on our hire car at Alamo so they basically let us pick anything we wanted. My son, who had just passed his driving test at home, thought all his birthdays had come at once. He picked a brand new white Mercedes 300 sport and thought he was the bees knees driving down Rodeo Drive in it lol.

We drove back to Vegas the following day and stopped at the outlets at Barstow and got some great bargains. All in all, not a bad way to spend a day and a bit in LA.

A day and a bit i.e. with an overnight stop i might consider, but that's quite a lot more time than just flying in in the morning and out again in the evening, especially as someone mentioned if the outward flight gets delayed.

If you're dead set on a day trip just to see some of the sights in LA, there are companies that organise it with a coach trip. I think it might be pricey and again you're still wasting a lot of a day travelling, but at least you wouldn't have to worry about getting to and from the airport and around LA whilst you're there. Not sure if that's something worth looking into? Or as ferf suggested, consider driving it so at least you have a car to get round LA and aren't at the mercy of airline schedules and delays.

It's a bit like the Grand Canyon day trips I suppose isn't it? Yes it can be done, but you have to consider how much you'll really get to see once you factor in all the faffing around with travelling there and back.

Thank you Yozzer-Yes Burbank :) (which would be the best one to fly into as it is closest to Hollyweird)

Hello all! Some of you may remember me from when I was posting on the 2010 thread as my husband and I went to Vegas for the first time in May last year & I posted a very indepth trip report. Well, we loved it so much, that we are planning a second trip in September :D:beer::beer::D , can't wait already!

My first question is flights - wow haven't they gone up!! I am currently checking every other day or so, and the best price I have found (on skyscanner.co.uk) is indirect with US Airways. This is coming in at £522 each (a whopping £50 each more than my indirect flights with Delta last year, ouch).

So, has anyone flown with US Airways? What are they like? We really liked Delta last year & would have happily flown with them again, but they are coming up over £100 per person more expensive this time round

    Any views appreciated :)

Do you guys have any recommendations for the best tours of the Hoover Dam?
And the best Helicopter strip flights?

Also, would you guys mind helping us out before tonight/tomorrow?
We did Scoot City Tours last year (I wrote about it in my Trip Report, which is in the OP), and theyre running a Facebook competition where a free tour can be won for the person with the most 'likes' of their 2010 tour picture.
You have to like Scoot City, and then like our picture:

Would appreciate it a lot! We had a lead, but the American who is also doing well, managed to pull ahead overnight!

If anyone helps, i'll buy them a beer if we ever meet! (Or give away some likely unused Restaurant.com certificates after our next trip!)

    Cheers Guys :)

I voted - im there 22nd Aug - 31st, so await my drink  - post it on Trip advisor if you havent already
    Hiya

Is it that Bad? We are in LV for 8 days and thought it would be a good day out. On Kayak the flights are £93 pp return

Guess in LA would want to see Hollywood Hills, Rodeo Drive, Walk of fame. Thought i could could just do one of those city tours (which i would pre-book)which would cover it all.

I have drove in Florida, but refused the car with Virgin in LV as dont really need it. But wouldnt fancy driving to LA anyway.

Its unlikely we are gonna do LV again anytime soon as have the kids....but then i did say that before our last trip in 2008 :D

    LA

Do you know what, id do it - i know about 90% of people wouldn't, but hell i think you're 12 hours from home whats a couple of hours to see another place.... http://www.starlinetours.com/ those guys do the hop on hop offs... actually, i think id stay a night just to have a "night out" at the viper room or some other cheesy LA rock bar type thing, and make it 2 days.... depends what you want to see .

Driving for me would be like hell on earth - so tour bus/hop on hop off would be ok.

don't bother with the one in NYNY . made a bad mistake going in there on my own for a beer.

Flamingo should suit needs . ask Stoneman about the European pool ( and it's female clientele )

I love it. I'm dead classy though

Ohhh i dont know what to do!! Im kinda with Sarah in that im only a couple of hours away so why not! California/LA is way down on my list for a dedicated holiday, but for the sake of a few hundred dollars i can say ive been there, even if it was only for a few hours.

Priced up LAS to burbank - for the both of us its $240 inc of tax with Southwest, probably about another $70 transfer, $100 dollars for tour bus............... Ohh what to do

    LA

What do you want to see/do? I guess that will help you plan how long you need fully.

Pretty much everyone i know hasnt liked it that much, bar one couple who loved it - so my early plans are early flight or bus on day 1, then late flight or bus back on day 2 (i would consider the bus).

I fancy seeing the stars, sunset blvd, and santa monica pier, that about it
