It does irk me to see bad service, I work in M&S on clothing but foods were short staffed 2 days before Christmas and me and another girl were asked to go down and help get some stock out onto shelves. Obviously with the time of year it was manic down there and as I was re-stocking a customer must have asked me for help around every 30 seconds, the only problem was that I didn't have a clue where anything was or if such and such had sold out. I hated having to say, I'm not sure as I don't usually work down here but if you bear with me a moment I will go and find out for you but at least I found out for them, I would never have dreamed of just telling them 'dunno'. To be fair to the customers the majority of them were fine about it, even when it sometimes took a minute to find someone else as they were all obviously either with customers or running around trying to find something too. There were a couple who got a bit snotty about it but that's up to them, I'm doing what I can for them and wasn't going to let a few people in a bad mood put me in one too, life's too short.0

It often puzzles me why supermarkets don't give staff a little map to where things are on shelves, it would save a lot of time. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0

It would cost too much to do and then there is the litter problem at the end of every day with people just chucking them on the floor. Basically though its the cost that prevents that idea - good idea though but not in practical terms....It often puzzles me why supermarkets don't give staff a little map to where things are on shelves, it would save a lot of time.0 -
Oh and another thing - shops, smarkets etc change everything round every two minutes (shopping feng shui) as a psycological marketing ploy thing so that map would be rendered useless within a month!!!0

Photcopying a few sheets for them, to carry in their pockets, will save time and ultimately money. The customer will be able to find the goods and the staff member will have more time to stack shelves. Litter concerns are something for management to tackle during training, although I can't see it being too much of an issue, to be honest.mrs-stressed wrote: »It would cost too much to do and then there is the litter problem at the end of every day with people just chucking them on the floor. A map for the customers would help too, but then some shops keep moving stick round to keep us on our toes!
When our locl Morrisons had a redesign, (not just one, they did it in stages, so just when you got used to it, they moved it all round again) I asked if they were going to do a map, as all the customers were walking round in a daze with empty trolleys, and the assistant laughed at me:o.
After the final move, I made my own little map as I went round isle by isle. I now dont do a random shopping 'list', I use an 5a notepad and write my item down in the approximate area it is in the shop.
I now do my shopping in half the time, as I dont have to search and double back for items, I zigzag round the isles quickly, its like a military operation, and im out!:rotfl:0 -
I think the word I used was problem - and your right its a concern not a problem! It would last a month where I work and then back to square one. People stopping me and asking stuff is all part of my job really. The one that bugs me is once you hold a door open for one person a whole stream of peole then nip through and dont say thanks or nothing! You are left with MUG written all over your face. I dont mind doing it for an elederley person but for a young, fit 25 year old lad - well thats taking the michael somewhat.....Litter concerns are something for management to tackle during training, although I can't see it being too much of an issue, to be honest.0 -
Ive thought of another obstacle! The map would be useless as it wouldnt be pertinent to that particular shopper. For instance, Mrs Smith goes into Tescos and wants some eggs. Tescos map then (as it is shortly becoming a seasonal item) might direct her to the Easter Egg aisle. She would then get mad and stop and ask someone.......!!It often puzzles me why supermarkets don't give staff a little map to where things are on shelves, it would save a lot of time.
A bit like the Yellow Pages. You never find what you want until you have dissected your original request into 'their' interpretation of what you want. Does that make sense.0 -
If someone holds a door for me I would smile and thank them, I would expect the same back. It's basic common courtesy, just like saying excuse me if you want to go past someone, or saying please or thank you.
And before anyone assumes I must be some stereotypical older person grumbling about the youth of today I'd like to point out that I am the youth of today!
I have only part quoted you as the rest I 100% agree with. Manners cost nothing and will get you everywhere, so we tell our 6 year old!
My comment isn't related to supermarkets but the yoof of today. I had to go to A&E a couple of nights ago and was walking up to the doors behind what I would have called a chav. He briefly turned around to spit on the ground and my immediate thought was 'oh what a delightful little ****'. I swear the ground could have opened up and swallowed me when he reached the doors to A&E and once through the first one he stopped and waited for me & DH to catch up (I was having breathing problems so could barely walk let alone run).
I have always had the attitude that you treat others as you expect to be treated but for once, my opinion of someone else was undeserved and just went to show that not all the young uns these days are ignorant and have no manners.0 -
How humbling!! We are brought down to earth very quickly arent we when someone we have initially stereotyped on a first sight - then they go and do something polite and courteous amd mannerley! My comment isn't related to supermarkets but the yoof of today. I bet you thanked him profusely - that will have made him feel good in return - and then he will do nice things for others more often as the thanks is such an ego booster.
As for spitting - well, he could have saved that up for inside the A&E department - at the very least he did it outside!!! Why I wonder did he feel the need to spit in the first place. It is the most disgusting thing ever ever ever.....0
