best diet?

hi guys -

I wrote a nice big thread lastnight and wake up this morning to find it didnt load and therefore didnt save opps!

Anyway to give you some background info on me. As a kid I was very active, played in 2 football teams, hockey team and netball team at school, went cycling in the summer (20k a day!) played tennis weekly and also went swimming every weekend. As you can imagine I was pretty happy with my lifestyle, had a good figure and could eat whatever I wanted because the fat would burn off in no time!

Then disaster hit at age 13, I developed a knee injury, which (to cut a long story short) is now a life long problem as my lovely hospital mis-diagnosed my condition, did too much physio on my knee and have worn out my cartlidge amongst other things. I was signed off every sport by the doctor from 13 onwards apart from swimming - which even know is a struggle as I cant bend or striaghten my knee properly - and according to my partner I swim vertically instead of horizontal - this isnt a problem for me as it takes twice as much effort as normal and so have a better workout!

Anyway - Im now 21, I weigh my heaviest at 15.5 stone and just 2 months ago was given weight loss tablets from my doctor (on my request) as even though Ive been trying to loss weight for 2 years, and have lost a stone Im stuck at this level. The tablets are HORRIBLE and I took myself off them within the first week as they made toilet trips horrid.

Ive now set myself a goal to go from size 20 down to size 14 before my dream holiday this July - thats leaving me 7 months!

Problem is, money is tight (as im sure with everyone) would love to join some clubs etc but not sure if I could afford to. Any help, advice, tips and encouragement would be greatly received as I do feel like Im doing this alone and dont always get the encouragement I need at home!

have you spoken to the practice nurse at your doctors surgery when I was dieting I found that the practice nurse would wiegh me once a week and it gave me great encouragement to know some one was checking my progress and it didn't cost me anything, and she would give advice on exercise and healthy eating

Hi Youngie - Unfortunately my practise nurse is a *****! Shes also the nurse I go to for my asthma and have stopped go to my reviews as 2 years ago her first comment was "well no wonder you have asthma look how fat you are"

I have spoke to the doctor about getting some form of support but all they offered are these tablets. There used to be a gym fitness plan where you would get 12 weeks free gym and a free instructor who would base a workout around your own goals etc - I did ask my doctor about this a few months ago but at the minute they arent sure if the scheme is still running :(

I had never been on a diet in my life before (never needed but noticed that with age, change of job to more sedentary, increased alcohol consumption:o) but unhappy that nice clothes don't fit any more.

At start of October I started Slimming World on their 'new' Extra Easy plan and it's just that! So far I've lost 1.5 stone and never felt hungry. It costs about £5 a week and I have heard of doctors 'prescribing' it but maybe not in your area. There is a thread on here about it that might suit you. Some people don't go to the classes (just ask questions on the thread) but I think it would be difficult with none of the books.

Obviously I don't know your financial situation but personally I think it's money well spent:) Good Luck.
  • Move more :)
Sounds silly but it works lol, im currently a size 18 and i am determined not to be a fat bride.
Hubby to be wants to set a date for the wedding but im reluctant to incase i aint lost enough wait.

I plan on investing in a smaller plate, drinking more water and moving more :)
Will not be a fat bride...
    Weight loss = 19lbs

  • there are various things the doctor can refer you to. One is called weightwise, there is also a 12 week slimming world course and it is free.
  • Ask your doctor about active lifestyle?? Last year i did this and lost about a stone and half.

Dont know if it dont up and down the country though

I'm also another Slimming World convert after trying Weight Watchers. Slimming is unfortunately expensive business but well worth the money. I pay £50 for 3 months of classes. So far it's cost me £150 for 9 months which having lost over 2 stone is money well spent.

My sister is on a low income and in August her GP prescribed her 6 months free slimming world. The deal was 3 months tester and if she lost something like half a stone they would give her another 3 months. So far she's lost 1.5 stone so is doing very well! I plan to gift her another 3 months once she's run out of vouchers as the difference to her health has been amazing but she really needs the support of the classes to keep her going.

Sister lives in Dorset and I'm in Bristol. There are people in my group who have had memberships prescribed by the GP so it seems to be fairly readily available.

I'd also endorse Slimming World. They don't offer GP referral for it in my area but a lot of places do, so it would be worth you asking.

It's £5 a week which isn't much really when you think about it. Just about the price of a takeaway pizza!;) You don't need to buy anything special either, just normal healthy ingredients.

Tonight we are all having a SW Lancashire Hotpot and it is always delicious. Totally ordinary food but cooked in a healthy way.

Have you considered that if you lose just ONE pound a week for your seven month holiday target that will be TWO stones lost. That is really achievable and it's better to lose weight slowly and re-educate yourself at the same time.

Let us know what you decide.:)

thank you all for the advice - will definately look into slimming world this evening. Im currently unemployed and fighting to pay a few debts off so money is pretty far stretched this month (both me and partner starting jobs in january though) but £5 isnt a lot at all - need to rethink the gym though as its costing £40 a month!

Also going to phone the doctor again and see if he is any further into getting me back on the fitness programme - was meant to do it today but was held up and didnt get a chance, will also ask if they do the free slimming world too!

thanks all - will let you know how I get on. Im hoping to lend scales from my mum to watch my weight loss progress - I also opted to walk instead of taking the car today and dished up 1/3 less that my usual plate size so definately all a start - the tin of quality streets while watching the soap is the main issue so close after christmas lol

    Hiya,

Dieting and everything related can get confusing, but its most important to remember that if your calorie consumption (what you eat) is less than your calorie output (energy you use!) you will lose weight. I know its a silly thing to post but its true. I found http://caloriecount.about.com/ so useful for keeping tabs on food in vs energy out. Write down every single little thing eaten and done (I even added things like brushing my teeth in the exercise section - every calorie you can see building up counts!!) helps with motivation loads.

Good luck, I hope you are able to get some help from your doctor!
