I very much doubt there will be a problem.
Dont mention it to the MOT man untill the car has passed though eh? :AProud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -
Now Now children, I didn't realise I was starting World War 3. Anyway, an update. My car seems fine, I havn't floored it down a steep hill yet, but the foot brakes work OK, there is no screeching or grinding when I drive or any burning smell. Its due for MOT next wek, so I'll get my friendly mechanic to check it over.
My daughter is 34 so she's been driving quite a while and is usually very competant. I think we have all done something like this so no use getting upset over it. I'm glad it isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg at the end of the day. ( fingers crossed)
Anyway, thank you all for your input, its always interesting to see how opinions differ.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Why would it cost you anything? If i did something like this in my parents car and it required some sort of repair I would foot the bill! I wouldnt wait for my parents to say to me "we need to get this checked out..." I would take the car myself (with the handbrake definately off) to a garage and ask someone to check it out due to MY error. then any repairs would come out my MY pocket.
And not all mechanics will lie about whether brakes need changing etc. Amazingly there are honest ones out there...0 -
Not so sure about that, the very same female must have driven for 15 miles with a red warning light fully on, in front of her.
Worrying....;)
It wouldnt surprise me if someone didnt see a warning light on. I lose track of how few people drive for miles without realising they have no lights on at night... it doesnt click when they cannot see what speed they're doing...0 -

Some cars have the dash lit whether the lights are on or not.;)0 -

It doesn't necessarily mean damage at all, and anyway, I'm pretty sure no mention was made of any burning smell.WhiteHorse wrote: »The burning smell was the linings burning on the inside of the drums. That means damage, although the linings may only be singed. Check how the handbrake performs, if it goes on and off and holds the car okay, that's good. Check that the brakes are not still binding as a result of the burning. If the car feels okay when you're driving it (no sluggishness, acceleration same as ever), then you've probably got away with it.0 -
Help! Daughter drove my car for 15 miles with handbrake on. I was in the car but didn't notice anything different. Only when we got out the car & smelt burning. I've parked the car now in the garage with the handbrake off, but what should I do tomorrow? Am I going to have to take it into the workshop? Whats the long term damage likely to be?
