Now Now children, I didn't realise I was starting World War 3. Anyway, an update. My car seems fine, I havn't floored it down a steep hill yet, but the foot brakes work OK, there is no screeching or grinding when I drive or any burning smell. Its due for MOT next wek, so I'll get my friendly mechanic to check it over.
My daughter is 34 so she's been driving quite a while and is usually very competant. I think we have all done something like this so no use getting upset over it. I'm glad it isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg at the end of the day. ( fingers crossed)
Anyway, thank you all for your input, its always interesting to see how opinions differ.

The burning smell was the linings burning on the inside of the drums. That means damage, although the linings may only be singed. Check how the handbrake performs, if it goes on and off and holds the car okay, that's good. Check that the brakes are not still binding as a result of the burning. If the car feels okay when you're driving it (no sluggishness, acceleration same as ever), then you've probably got away with it."Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0
