I would eat them, pregnant or not.
I ate peanuts whilst pregnant, and also eggs which werent totally nuked, had the occasional glass of wine and beer, and rare meat, and my kids all survived :)

Alternatively find out how much they cost then plan to cut your weekly budget by that much for one week to make up for the 'wastage' ;)

  • Despite what the best before date on the can states, anything canned should last indefinately. This is because the contents is sterilised in the tin after sealing (usually by high tempreture and pressure). This ensures that all the micro-organisms and bacteria in the food are destroyed. This should ensure that there is nothing left in the can to contaminate and spoil the food.

However if the can has deteriorated in some way (rusted perhaps), or the seal had a fault to start with, then the food could spoil.

That said there are often stories in the news about people eating tinned goods which are decades old. Some bloke just recently ate a canned chicken that he received when he was married... 50 years previously (check out the link below).

That said I think your doing the right thing by not eating anything out of date while your pregnant. I think Tee Pee is spot on by saying you'd only worry about it afterwards... I'd say your peace of mind is more important than a simple tin of toms worth no more than 40 odd pence! You could of course save it and have it after you've finished being pregnant and have stopped breast feeding (if your planning to do that).

Congratulations on the pregnancy by the way!

A man celebrated his golden wedding anniversary by eating a 50-year-old tin of chicken.
SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"

Hmmm... well it was part of a 4 pack for 99p so I don't feel too guilty for not eating it. Pre-MSE I was a lot more wasteful than that :o

Having worked in the canning industry, I'm afraid there IS a risk from eating highly acidic canned foods that are passed their BBF date - as the acid eats into the lining of the tin (which is tin BTW) and this gets disolved into the product, too much tin is poisonous http://www.portfolio.mvm.ed.ac.uk/studentwebs/session2/group29/tintox.htm

    Congrats Mrs Sparkle

Please don't eat them and risk both the health of you and your Sparklet-to-be!

But you could recycle the tin and put the contents in garden waste bin or compost bin...
