only thing with tinned food, is the metal / plastic lining can leach into the food (did a bit about it at uni) think it was bisphenol A but dont quote me on that!!!!

I wouldnt be too worried normally and not when it not so far off the best before date as they cover themselves byputting the bb date quite a bit before products are becoming yukky (not a technical term but u know what i mean). Obv being pregnant if ur anything like i think i would be if i got pregnant i would take anyrisk butmaybe im just a bit OTT

I would eat them. Don't usually look at the date on tinned tomatoes unless I think they've been there ages!

And August is only 8 weeks ago!!! Now if it was August 2005 I'd say no :D

    BTW I'm pregnant too ;)

  • A man celebrated his golden wedding anniversary by eating a 50-year-old tin of chicken.

Why did he eat the tin? He should have eaten the chicken but not the tin! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

LOL. Come on now, someone that keeps a tin of chicken in the larder for 50 years is probably capable of anything!

When pregnant, I inadvertantly ate some'fresh' tomato soup from Tesco's which then made me violently sick. When I checked the carton, it was 12 days out of date! (But I'd only just bought it from Tesco's that day.) So, yes, off tomatoes nopt nice - pregnant or not.

I say instead of chucking the toms out give them to hubby for tea (but don't tell him the date) and make something else for yourself!!

Oh dear that reminds me of something I'd forgotten about.

I made some soup for the wife while she was pregnant. I did a stupid thing and left it on the stove all night and heated it up for her the next day... It had cream in it...

She was very very ill for a couple of days, and couldn't keep anything down. We called NHS Direct it was that bad. They were very good and arranged an appointment with her doctor. Strangely the doctor was very dismissive and told her that she wasn't an ethiopian and that as long as she was drinking enough water everything would be fine because the baby is protected by that gizmo that surrounds it... whats it called... The water sack thingy (placenta)? She was prescribed something to help her take on water and that was that. Baby was fine!

  • Despite what the best before date on the can states, anything canned should last indefinately. This is because the contents is sterilised in the tin after sealing (usually by high tempreture and pressure). This ensures that all the micro-organisms and bacteria in the food are destroyed. This should ensure that there is nothing left in the can to contaminate and spoil the food.

However if the can has deteriorated in some way (rusted perhaps), or the seal had a fault to start with, then the food could spoil.

That said there are often stories in the news about people eating tinned goods which are decades old. Some bloke just recently ate a canned chicken that he received when he was married... 50 years previously (check out the link below).

That said I think your doing the right thing by not eating anything out of date while your pregnant. I think Tee Pee is spot on by saying you'd only worry about it afterwards... I'd say your peace of mind is more important than a simple tin of toms worth no more than 40 odd pence! You could of course save it and have it after you've finished being pregnant and have stopped breast feeding (if your planning to do that).

Congratulations on the pregnancy by the way!

But his wife looked a little worried in the picture.
