got 3 bags of softgrain bread flour from the farm shop today so £8.25 spent. We tried the cheaper supermarket flour but the bread just wasn't so nice and I have to have one vice ;)!

I make a coating for roast gammon with a mixture of cranberry sauce, orange zest, orange juice and mustard. Let me know if you would like the recipe.

Thanks for that. I never knew you could make a sponge without eggs either. No lemons in the house but I will file it away for another day.:)

P.S. This is my first attempt at multi quoting - hope it works:)

ETA: Sort of worked, but the second quote didn't come out in the nice box like the first

Oh yes please, I'd LOVE the recipe, it sounds delicious. Thank you!:T

This made me actually laugh out loud :rotfl: Year ago my mum was talking about jamaica ginger cake and called it jaminja cake - this is now how it is always known. Dont bat an eyelid until someone gives me a funny look and I then have to carefully think what it should be called!! Not quite as bad as the time my friends mum went into our hardwear shop and said she was looking for durex...............the poor man didnt know where to look (she meant dulux) :rotfl:

He he he thats a brilliant one.

Your durex one reminds me of something I did when I was a first time mother, in the days before disposable nappies. I went into a chemist shop and asked for a packet of 3 rubbers and was handed durex, my wee granny's face was bright red. I was of course looking for rubber pants for the baby. What made it worse was I had never even seen durex, and didn't realise till YEARS later why my wee granny was so embarrassed LOL.

My OH came away with a lovely one the other day he called tights Tracksuitsox.?????

    4 eggs, beaten
    2 heaped tsps instant coffee
    8oz soft margerine
    8oz SR flour
    8oz caster sugar
    2 tsps baking powder

    For the filling & topping:

    2oz margerine
    6oz icing sugar
1tbsp coffee essence or 1 heaped tsp instant coffee disolved in 1 tblsp hot water
    1 tbsp milk

Pre heat oven to 180/350/Gas 4. Grease and base line 2 x 8 inch sandwich tins.

Place the eggs in a bowl and stir in the coffee until dissolved. Add the remaining ingredients and beat well until thoroughly blended.

Divide between the 2 tins and level out.

Bake for about 25 mins until well risen and the top of the cake is springy. Leave to cool for a minute or 2 then turn onto a rack to cool completely.

To make the butter cream, blend together marg, icing sugar and coffee/water or essence until smooth. Add the milk if necessary.

Sandwich the 2 cakes together with half the buttercream and spread the rest on the top. Decorate with walnut halves, chocolate curls, choc drops or whatever you have to hand.

I tend to make double this amount of buttercream to sandwich and cover the top of the cake and pipe rossettes on.
Oh my - that does sound lush. Thank you for that XSpender I need some new sandwich tins before I can try it, but try it I will :)

Hi Hippechiq and happy new year  good to see you on here :)
Thanks to you too hun, and a Happy New Year to you :)

It's great to see so many new faces in here, and people sharing new recipes.....I do love a new recipe :T

Another NSD here for me, but I'll be buying $limfast for my DD tomorrow, so siggy wont look so great after I've bought five tins of that!

Thank you very much to the person (sorry, I can't find the post now) who mentioned several pages back that it's on offer. I'm not near an A$da, and have decided to try doing one online shop in the middle of this month (despite it being disasterous last time I tried) so will have to get it from Te$co which is within walking distance from me. My $upermarket are showing it as being on offer at £4 per tin, which is a great improvement on £5.96!

  • Good Evening all you lovelies!
I've figured out i really must be ill, or this thread is working for me, i was sent an email from a*da with some brilliant offers on it, and thought i could get this this and that, then deleted the order and said to myself, your freezer is full, you have the next 3 days dinner in the fridge, what on earth are you playing at? lol. I did a little shop on monday, and that has been it, so in Jan i am upto 5NSD's on groceries! have a full freezer (thanks to reduced veggies at a*da just after xmas and meat at sainsbugs)
Mum had bought me a packet of extra lean mince from L*dl when it was half price, so last night i made the base of mince and onions and veggies, mixed in some baked beans (i love it) and seperated what i was going to have for dinner last night into a seperate pan and added some gravy, then to the remainder added some garlic and a tin of tomatoes, removed two portions from the pan for bolognese (one in the fridge for 2m and one in the freezer) and then added half a tin of spicy mixed beans and a half a tin of sweetcorn, some chilli powder and made three portions of chilli, one in the fridge, 2 in the freezer, added the end of the tin of sweetcorn and mixed spicy beans to another pan, added a handful of chopped up (whoopsied) mushrooms, and chopped the end of the sausages i cooked on mon (whoopsied to 39p for 8 little walls ones) some tom puree and water and had it for tea tonight with left over couscous from tuesdays dinner of salmon and couscous... so i dont need to do any cooking the rest of the week, have left over sausage and bean mix with cous cous for lunch, bolognese for dinner, chilli for dinner on sat and enchilada's with the wraps in the bread bin, chilli mix and grated cheese...
Something says i did good deleting that order!
Oh, and the savoury mince last night was divine!

I just hope i can continue using the contents of the freezer and cupboards up, a little worried the cupboard will fall off the wall soon its that full and stacked on top of.
Letting a couple of banana's go over to make banana bread instead of buying cake, and plum upside down sponge to do desserts for a few days.
Domestic goddess in the making according to my OH. :) compliment as he fancies Nigella. lol

    Have a lovely evening
    SS xxx

NSD today - I had Toasted sandwiches with the last of the goats cheese and tomatoes. Dinner was Jerk chicken cooked by my flatmate.

Tomorrow and Thursday lunch I'll have a small plate of curry and then afterwards a small bowl of Xmas pudding with brandy sauce for lunch (it needs using up..........) :D

Not sure what I'll do for my dinners but I'll decide later.

Shouldn't need to spend anything until Saturday in actual fact since I've still got a lot of food in (famous last words!)

Sorry - what are Huggises? I looked online but it asked me if I meant 'Huggies' and I presume you aren't planning on eating baby nappies :rotfl::o

sorry :rotfl:shown myself up here, not great at spellchecking:D

  • Did my big shop today, spent just £50 at M@S to get my £10 off, some nice stuff and got the cleaning gear. Stocked up on plastic containers, cling film etc from £l@nd to ensure I have plenty to wrap my leftovers for work etc. Went to morri£ons, and went a bit overboard on the offers, my son loves sauce! I can feel a difference when I am selecting things, as I am looking for lots of uses/ leftovers opportunities, not just a quick fix.
I also asked DD to calculate my spend on my phone, she found it fun and was very vocal when I reached my limit! I think this will be good for her to learn that you have to watch the pennies. As I was out most of the day, not much opportunity for home cooking, but made jacket spuds and a baked rice pudding, as I read about it on here, and fancied it. It was yummy, and warming in the snowy weather.
A NSD tomorrow as working, aim to spend nothing all weekend as have lots! Have a great weekend all!

Hi all! Can I join this challenge? I just started my MFW diary and one of the two major goals I have is reigning in the spending on my food bill. One of the very helpful suggestions I've been given is to join this board.

I've set a first month goal of £150 so I'll just have to see how that goes and try to work it down by degrees :) I'm sure some of the nice cheap recipe ideas I see will help me towards this.

Anyway I've just done a big update of my spreadsheets and my new signature is below
