  • Yeah , he's still there! I haven't quite had the pleasure yet, as Graham hole is covering most of the stats (research methods as it known by, as 'stats' scared people LOL).
When were you at sussex then? Any tips? (I always stow them away safely like gold!)

No, but I've seen him lecture, and his book and website have got me through some tough times. I wish I'd been taught by him at undergrad 'cos it wouldn't have been such an uphill struggle to catch up as a post grad!
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • I'll make sure that I make the most of it all then!

I'll also be sure to point out your compliment as well- and what a compliment it is!
  • Hello! You're over the road from me on Glyntaff, is that right?
    Do you like it there?
    I absolutely love it.

Yeah, I'm only doing a few classes on Glyntaff this year and I do spend a lot of time on the main campus. If you fancy meeting up for a coffee sometime let me know :D

I have been really lucky. There are lots of mature students on my course, about 50%, and even the younger ones are not so bad, we all enjoy a few pints down the pub.

My friend is doing teaching and to be honest she has turned into a bit of a snob. Maybe teaching attracts the not so friendly students, who think they are “it”.

Don’t pack it in if you really want to teach. You can get through this.

I know what you mean. A friend of mine is now a teacher - has been for a couple of years now - and I think the power she has over a class full of kids has gone to her head! She used to be really laid back and unassuming, but now she's bolshy, bossy and has some pretty nasty teacher friends too! Of course i'm not saying all teachers are like that - I actually want to get into teaching after my degree - just that I can see where you're coming from! I'm not a power-hungry type and wouldn't dream of lording it over anyone (I despise snobbery), so I hope I'm not surrounded by those types once i'm a a teacher

im 24 doing events management and thankfully ALL my class are mature students, im the youngest! The lecturers say it makes a great difference and they actually enjoy teaching us because we want to be there as opposed to being there because we dont really know what else to do.

If anyone is thinking of doing a phd in engineering or physical sciences and doesn't know where to look for funding or just wants a bit of advice feel free to PM me.

Also for postgrad positions try https://www.jobs.ac.uk - this is where i found my phd position. Also useful for engineering & physical sciences funding - https://www.epsrc.gov.uk. There are research councils for a lot of disciplines - shown below - just google'm they give good info on funding.

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
    Medical Research Council (MRC)
    Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC)

BTW, stipend from EPSRC this year is about £12,500 (tax free! - thats the best part).
