/QUOTE]
When I was a uni student (aged 18 - 21) I used to hang around with the few mature students for this reason and it was really nice to be accepted by them and listen to the things that had to say - often based on a good life experience, I felt that other people with some exceptions (I made a few good friends) were a bit snooty at times and that the mature students were far more down to earth
If it's what you want to do, stick at it
Also, they used to let us post assignments in as long as it was post marked the hand in date.0 -

I am 36 and have a hubby and 3 children (well, 1 is nearly 18 and wil be off to uni in September herself). The younger ones all seem to stick together so I feel isolated - there are a few mature students but not many in the groups I am in. Some of the younger ones are absolutely awful - give filthy looks to anyone who doesn't fit into their little clique and won't talk to you.
I have been really lucky. There are lots of mature students on my course, about 50%, and even the younger ones are not so bad, we all enjoy a few pints down the pub.
My friend is doing teaching and to be honest she has turned into a bit of a snob. Maybe teaching attracts the not so friendly students, who think they are “it”.
Don’t pack it in if you really want to teach. You can get through this.0 -

Other info: Married mum of 2 under 5s. First degree as I left school at 16 - thought I knew what I wanted to do. Have received no funding. So much for helping mums get back into work/studying. Enjoying it loads so far. Helps that I find it easy/ interesting as I don't have much time to commit. Will get harder as it goes on, no doubt!0 -

The little group I am in is made up of an 18yo, 20yo, me and a 40yo. I think having the different ages and life perspectives makes for really interesting debate. The younger two are not long out of school so have some great study tips, the older has worked for years, no family, but is the confident one in the group and me, with the kids, is the one that needs all the help I can get from them!
I find that it is not always just the younger 'cliques' that can be catty, all our year reps are mature students of varying ages and their littles cliques can be just as bad! I dont have the time to deal with them though so I just keep myself to myself!
You just got to keep going for what you want!

I love being at uni, I have wanted this for so long, but kids kept popping out every time I started to get there!
There is a great mix of ages in psychology and I think it depends on what course you are doing too, as to how you all relate to each other. I would image that the social workers degree peeps would get on well too- that caring aspect you see! I am also a student rep and one of joint president for the society, so am well in there! It does help, and yes I think as you get older you speak louder, not because your hearing is failing you, but because you have more confidence in doing so.
It's great , but hard work too. So much reading (plus essays, reports, presentations etc etc )and trying to balance homelife, uni and renumerated work - it's a struggle, but it only lasts for 10 weeks at a time thankfully. However, I have about 9 exams in the summer to look forward to, so we shall see how that fares on the nervous system.0 -
