if you are planning to use a local sim card then it will need unlocking ( think Voda do it for free after a certain length of time) and a local sim card purchased , a local voda sim will not work in a UK locked verson

If it's just a case of you going on holiday - yes, it'll work. The 3GS is (I think) quad band. You'll sign on to a local network. Be aware of roaming charges.

turn off data roaming and if you can turn off data full stop

if your are not planning to use your phone for calls or texts at all (as you are on holiday and both are very expensive to use abroard) I would turn on 'airplane mode' before you leave the UK you will not even be charged for recieving any missed calls and texts while your phone is abroad.
  • I'm glad i've found this thread, i'm hoping to get the iPhone and was wondering how you'd go about using it solely as an iPod whilst abroad, is this possible if the data roaming etc is switched off?

I'm very padantic when it comes to charges whilst abroad which is why i left my phone at home when i went on holiday last year. Seen as though the iPhone would be my source of music though, i'd obviously want to take it. I take it the device is allowed onboard an aircraft?

All the features of the phone still still work except for anything where data needs to be downloaded from the internet. So things like ipod, games, phone and texts will all still work.

Of course you can take it on a plane.

A plane is a woodworking tool. The iPhone will work on one of those, but be careful not to damage the 'phone!

It'll also work on an airplane. From the options menu, select "airplane mode" which means your iPod, applications etc will work fine.

You can still (usually) use data abroad, but be aware of the charges.

    Pedantic much?

A plane is also a flat, two-dimensional surface. I was using the meaning of it being a contraction of aeroplane, which incidentally is the accepted British English term.

Oh and 'phone? The 19th century is over dear.
  • Thanks to you both.

if you switch your phone to airplane mode before you leave the UK then the network still thinks that the phone is in the UK so you would not be charges for recieving any calls or texts nor would any data be used.

and best of all you can turn wifi back on to use the free wifi hotspots whilst abroad for internet/skype ect.

just as long as you dont connect the phone to the mobile network, the home network has no idea where it is. (the same is true in reverse if you use your phone abroad and switch it off when you come back into the UK and don't turn it back on you still get charged the abroad rates for every call/text you recieve untill you connect to the UK network)
