if you switch your phone to airplane mode before you leave the UK then the network still thinks that the phone is in the UK so you would not be charges for recieving any calls or texts nor would any data be used.

Seeing as my previous post was deleted, I'd just like to reiterate that this is incorrect. The network can easily tell that you are roaming from the fact that your GSM connection is on a foreign network. Roaming existed long before 3G data connections did.

    Pedantic much?
Oh, I'm terrible. And getting worse as I get older.

A plane is also a flat, two-dimensional surface. I was using the meaning of it being a contraction of aeroplane, which incidentally is the accepted British English term.
Surely if you were contracting, you would demonstrate that with an apostrophe, as in "'phone?"

Anyway, it's not accepted by my pilot friend who is nearly as pedantic as me.

Sorry, very off topic post there. The point about airplane mode and network connection is interesting.

Download Skype on your computer. Set up an account (Free).
On your phone go to the app store and download the Skype app. Sign in.
When going overseas turn off data roaming (before leaving the UK)
Find free wifi spot, sign in to Skype and call your friends who are also on Skype.
If you want cheap calls as opposed to free calls you can load your Skype account with cash (using c/c) and call home, office and mobile numbers.
    simple
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

read my post very carefully before you make yourself look even more silly.

    do you see it now?

here's the answer just for you: airplane mode switched on (before you leave the UK) while abroad means you never connect to any foreign network, therefore the network thinks the phone is off and back in the UK (since the networks use the last place you connected to as where you are)

If your phone is essentially off (airplane mode) then what does it matter where the network thinks you are (the whole point of what you were saying)? You won't be physically able to receive calls/texts anyway. I think it's quite clear what you were trying to say, and now you have realised you were wrong you are trying to change your point.

Either that or you were just inventing a moot point in order to troll.

the point is if the network knows (because that was the last place you connected) you are abroad you get charged the abroad rates whether the phone is on or off, that means for every call that you get whether you answer it or it goes to voicemail because your phone is off, you get charged (in the past you also got charged for recieving texts abroad but thankfully that has changed to free)

so if you are going abroad and do not want to use your phone, or only use it for an mp3 player/camera and intend to turn it off so as not to rack up charges for recieving calls, then you have to turn on airplane mode before you leave the UK (and not turn it off when you arrive or check for any last texts when you get to the forign country then turn it off)

some evidance about the voicemail charges http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=338801

I think it is you who is sorely missing the point.

Ah that's it, slowly trickle in extra pieces of information. A typical troll tactic. Where in this thread had anyone mentioned voicemail? You were talking about "receiving calls or texts". Nobody was talking about voicemail.
