Hi Emay! What sort of size cake were you planning to make? This year I did a big one for us and ended up throwing half of it away - which I hate doing  I used a sponge fruitcake recipe and fed it with a cheap whisky I found in Netto. I had to double the quantity to make it around 9inches wide and around 4inches deep. It took 2hrs to cook instead of 1hr because of doubling the size. I hope this helps!

    thanks everyone for the replies.

At the minute I'm not sure of tin sizes as neighbours kindly flooded our kitchen on xmas eve so everything is in boxes everywhere at the minute :(, but it is a square tin and one of the nice links someone posted said about cutting into quarters so may just do that.

My favourite presents this year were a beautiful crocheted blanket by my mum (it was supposed to be a wedding present bless her :D at least I got it in the same year- I'm very proud of her)

Betterlife/ Wammy77 I saw these amazing piccys for a fairy party on celebrations at home http://www.celebrationsathomeblog.com/2010/07/enchanted-fairy-party.html

And there are loads more piccys there as well. I don't have any kiddies but may have to do a fairy party for my god daughter - just because they look so fab.

    :D

Thanks for the link, im going to steal some ideas, as my sons birthday is april and we're having a party outdoors, hopefully with some owls too. his new fav 'pet'!

with regards to the blanket from your mum, shes not 'late' with the present, as tradition states that guests have up to 1 year after the 'big' day to give a present.... i cant rememebr where i read that, but its true lol
at least i hope it is, im still waiting on the last part of a present form my BF whos wedding was July!

i have so many idea`s already for birthdays and christmas this year, i started my mums birthday present last nite, her birthday is not til march so i have plenty of time. im making her a sewing box, out of a a4 size key box i bought from a charity shop last year :o, ive taken it apart and painted it in a shabby chic/vintage effect, i intend to pad front cover to make into big pin cushion, and inside i will put an assortment of pretty sewing accessories, ive nearly funished a pretty wrist pin cushion, i will add pics when finished :D my mil b-day is next mth she`s a knitter, i`d like to buy a basket/bin or tin bin and cover in pretty fabric and turn it into a little knitting hamper, with needle roll, etc any idea what are the most common size needles used for knitting double knit?? :p

I tend to use or 3.25mm and 4mm needles for double knitting, i like the idea of the sewing box and the knitting basket

    Lovely ideas :D

Best needles would be size 4mm and 4.5mm.
BUT you need to know if she prefers plastic or bamboo needles.

I made a Needle case for mine - a larger version of a Crayon Roll

A novelty pincushion would go down well, or a Sewing Tidy

Or a case to hold scissors and cutters
