Told you need to phone up to cancel? WRONG

  • I did not realise that Experian had to accept my email cancellation and I went down the phone route instead. However the telephone number on their website just leads you on an automated circle and is of no use.
After Experian received my cancellation email. I was given this number to ring, which was sucessful, and I have now cancelled my membership.
The number is 0800 561 0083. I hope this helps anyone else who's free trial ran into the following month.

Posted by the OP after DMGs now deleted post and after your and someone else's posts in a similar vein. Maybe the deleted posts tell a different tale, but it certainly doesn't look that way.

Just because you "accept" the way one person (or indeed a number of people) posts, does not mean that it may not come across as aggresive / sarcastic / rude to a newbie.

The OP was making a valid comment about a difficulty they had faced. Just because DMG didn't agree, based on 3rd hand evidence, doesn't explain how you and a couple of others came to disagree too. Unless you believe that anything DMG says should be treated as gospel?

Too much buddying up going on within MSE? People need to take a step back and look at how they are thinking (or not doing)?

Edit - Interesting that credit-geek, having been accused of being a plant, doesn't come the same "stupid" line and takes it in their stride. A better way to react imho.

I don't need anyone's approval to post or anyone's approval about what I post. I will post exactly what I feel and what I want to.

I was cancelling my free trial with Credit Expert, and after emailing them and being told I had to phone up to cancel, I decided to do a bit of digging - I assumed the main reason for them not wanting to cancel by email was so one of their sales team could try and persuade me to stick with them on the phone.

    According to the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000, if you give any company notice to cancel by email, then that will suffice. This is applicable to anything bought via the following;

    the internet
    digital television
    mail order, including catalogue shopping
    phone
    fax

The specific part of the regulation:

    4) A notice of cancellation given under this regulation by a consumer
to a supplier or other person is to be treated as having been properly
    given if the consumer -

    (d) sends it by electronic mail, to the business electronic mail
address last known to the consumer (in which case it is to be taken to
have been given on the day on which it is sent).

    Hope this helps someone :)

Does this apply to Bt as I sent them an email recently the gist of which was saying I want to cancel without penalty due to the vat changes on their website, they phoned me and proceeded to heavily tell me I cannot cancel due to vat changes as its not their fault its the governments apparently.
I always wanted to be a procrastinator, never got round to it...
