A back and hip problem, I have a motability car but my hubby and I are thinking of giving it back and stopping DLA.. Even though I have back problems and cant walk very far.. some days cant walk at all.. I hate proving myself to people.. The stress of all the changes is crazy, I would rather not have DLA or a car and know what money I am getting and when even if it's a lower amount at least its a bit more guaranteed than the benefits are at the moment!!
It's horrible for people like us who have to constantly proove that things are not good, where there are people who are on JS who go out drinking and doing drugs eveyday and have god knows how many children and still get £xx each week!!!
I know and understand what you are saying. It's not right that people are put into this situation, but you do have to do what you feel is best for you.
If I was in your situation, I would be considering the same. I only get ESA, but that causes so much stress in having to go for regular assessments, failed claims, appeal hearings - only to find that you are re-tested again within 13 weeks of winning the appeal.
For the amount of money involved, I am seriously looking for a part time job even though I know I am going to find it very difficult to cope with, but at least I won't have to keep putting up with trying to convince Uncle Tom Cobley and all that in reality I am not fit for work.
Yes there are those that find a way of living on benefits - but for me, I hate it!0 -

Yes that is all well and good, but it doesn't remove the underlying worry.
The not knowing what the future holds with this new PIP benefit.
It is best to have less money coming in and be worry free than to have a few £s extra but not sleeping at nights!
I personally only get ESA by choice. My GP & Consultant are always going on about DLA, I have been to DIAL, Age UK and CAB and they all say that I should be receiving some payment. But when I ask the question is that guaranteed, they have all said no, you may have to fight for it. I don't have the strength to do that after the Tribunal for ESA agreeing then being told that the DWP still don't believe me, so they want to start all over again. No, If I have to go through that for DLA, I don't want to know.0 -
Petrolhead, I agree with you totally, for me I feel benefits are more stressful that what they're worth.. Weve decided for my hubby to find a night job so he can still help me in the day etc.. I would rather have less money that the stress of whether or not we'll be paid all the time!
I know we would still get some help with housing costs etc because we rent and still get tax credits but claiming anything else is too stressful!!!...I am a very proud Mummy and Wifey

I got my DLA renewal paperwork a few weeks ago - i found filling out all those pages very depressing - a constant reminder of what I am no longer capable of doing.
I have Metatastic Breast Cancer - it spread to my lungs before it was discovered - but the paperwork doesn't cover breathing!
I sent copies of letters Oncologist did for my pension claim (12mth rule applies). My OH said he wouldn't be suprised if they then limited my DLA renewal to 12mths, just to see if I die or not!
I did not want to take the option of the car as
1. There was nothing wrong with the car I had.
2. I have two kids so need a family size car and didn't want to pay over a non returnable £995
3. £50 a week over 3yrs = £7800 + deposit. Alot of money.
I get ESA (support group) over 28mths now - I'm not worried about the changes - wait and see what happens.0 -

Why not? Just let it go into the bank and forget about it; if it stops, it stops.0 -

Not everybody can or does have that sort of attitude to it.
Maybe you do not worry about how the future will affect you.
Maybe uncertainty doesn't bother you.
Maybe you just accept that if you are called in for a medical you will go ahead and do it.
If you lose some or all of your benefit, you would then appeal and fight the DWP at the Tribunal with all of that that it entails.
From some of the posts on this thread it appears that I am not the only one who thinks like I do. I can see a lot more people in the future doing the same instead of having to go through tests, gathering evidence etc under the new PIP.
Look what happened to Pension Credit. The takeup of that benefit was very poor. Why? Because people just couldn't cope with having to fill out the form, be asked questions and the thought that if they did receive it, they may be in some sort of trouble if anything financially changed in their lives. They would sooner live on a smaller income and have no worry or concerns than apply and take that benefit.
Maybe you are either a lot stronger in mind and spirit that a lot of us or, as I said before, better in health than you allow others to think.0 -
I suffer from severe anxiety and can't deal with the stress of it all. Also I have Di George Syndrome, Ostoearthiritis and COPD.
the only real change being made to DLA is the introduction of medicals to replace the application process we have now,in all honestly as these medicals wont start till some time in 2013 and take 3 years to introduce(during which there will be an election and poss change of govt)it could be 2016 before YOU see any change.
A possible 6 years is a long time,so just forget all about it and get on with your life as best you can.0 -
petrolhead. wrote: »To make that statement I do not believe that you fullly understand and appreciate the stress of uncertainty and worry.
There are two types of claimants.
Those that see it as their right to benefit and will 'walk over hot coals' to get it
and
Those that don't have that strength of body or mind to cope with change and would sooner 'do without' as it is the easier option.
I have the impression that that you fall into the former.
you are so so wrong and FYI I'm not disabled...0 -

I can understand people worrying about losing money if they have come to rely on it. I cannot understand why they would need to worry about losing it if it were just quietly mounting up in a savings account.
(And it's my husband who has a disability, not me.)0 -

It's all speculation right now, isn't it? I don't think they said "we're definitely doing x or y".Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked
