both consoles have advantages over the other but from what I've seen produce pretty similar graphics and seem fairly well matched in ability.
I have a PS3 but got one when they were backwards compatible so wanted to keep using my ps2 games.....with hindsight, it wasn't such a big deal having the backwards compatibility because I rarely played the ps2 games on the new console.

Personally I'd say get the PS3 so you have the blu ray player if a new console is announced but like I said, the xbox swill have advantages over the ps3 eg better networking and integration with windows pc.

You decide what functions or games you want and buy the console that suits.

the PS3 works well with PS3 media server though.i do prefer the layout of the PS3 for media playback
the 360 is a bit faster to brows files though

the backwards compatibility is a funny one
i always said that most people wouldn't bother iwth BC once they got the new console
however recall sony and their fanboys touting that it was the only console with hardware BC etc etc
they went a bit quieter when it went software
then dismissed BC as a feature when they dropped it

One of my mates has his 360 hooked up to a home network talking to a server and several other windows pcs in his house....that's something that the ps3 may have difficulty with although I do know the ps3 can be hooked up as a media server.

the backwards compatibility I suppose was a good selling point - it means my ps2 library isn't immediately obsolete - otherwise why buy ps3 and not xbox? :)

Reason for not playing ps2 games on ps3 is that once i saw what a ps3 game looked like and played like, the ps2 games were poor by comparison. great in their day and hours of fun but when you see the improvement, you don't really want to go back to it.
Also inconvenient was the memory card slot that the ps2 had was removed in the ps3 - so you had to make a virtual slot and buy additional hardware to transfer saved games from ps2 to ps3.

for every advantage one console has, the other one has one too.
the xbox may be better on a home network with pcs but it costs to play online.......and so on and so forth.

One advantage the PS3 has that people haven't mentioned is the BBC iPlayer/ITV Player/40D built in. Works like a charm.

Oh, and the web browser is fantastic and plays YouTube etc on my 47" telly - also good for watching the footy at 3pm on a Saturday if you know where to look ;-).

The games are similar on both platforms, though the 360 tends to edge it slightly when a title appears on both (due to the 360 normally being the 'lead' platform and it's slightly easier to program).
  • the xbox has a better games line up imo, however they are prone to overheat problems, RROD, i fix these and they are a total pain in the !!!! to be honest.

once a console starts to red ring it is inevitable that it will eventually die for good.

you have to pay to play xbox live whereas the ps3 you don't

the ps3 has a built in blu-ray player.

the ps3 does have some overheat issues but is much more reliable and well built.

i have two 360's in the house and when they eventually die i shall be getting a ps3 as a replacement.

media can be added to the ps3 hard drive easier too. the xbox is quite restrictive.
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

you think the web browser is fantastic? i find it terrible to use
    maybe it requires practice
I admit that i forget about the iplayer etcd as we get it on cable.
i also have it on my TV but i find the resolution on the 50" pretty poor vs the cable version
  • I am debating the xbox 360 myself, There always a deal somewhere if you keep an eye open!

A couple of friends have PS3 and 360 but most of them agree the 360 is a better machine for gaming.
    Signature removed by popular demand.
  • I am getting an Xbox for now then getting a PS3 in a few months so I can play Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5 and a few other ps3 exclusives.

Anyone know where I can get a good deal on the new 250gb Xbox along with a game (not FIFA) and an extra controller?

It's fantastic in that it's the whole web and not some cut down version. Most web pages appear fine, and embedded videos etc seem to work. It's also very smooth scrolling when zoomed in.

That is why i like the ps3 the exclusives, played both games mentioned brilliant. No idea on a deal though.
  • Whoever said they are already over their expected lifespan is talking rubbish! The PS1 was released in 1995, the PS2 in 2000 and the PS3 in 2007 (in the UK), so the PS3 is only coming up to its 4th Birthday.

I wouldn't expect to see another Xbox for 2-3 years and another Playstation for 4-5 years.

As to which is better, I own both and think the PS3 has not only gained lost ground but has now overtaken the Xbox as the better console. It has the better games (the PS3 exclusives for 2011 are staggering) and graphics the Xbox simply can't produce. The online is now as good as Xbox live but free and it has a blu ray player built in.
