I am thinking of buying either one pretty soon. I was wondering whether Sony or Microsoft are going to be releasing another console withing then next 2 years?

No idea. The current generation have already gone 2 years over the standard "new generation" release cycle and there's nothing been announced or any rumours of test units. Microsoft and Sony have only just recently released modified designs in the last 12 months and you don't do that unless you're planning on selling lots for a long time to come.
Personally I think the games devs are still nowhere near wringing the best out of the consoles and they've got a lot of life in them yet.
Ultimately if your decision to buy one or not today based on what might be in 2 years, build a gaming PC.0 -
I just don't wanna waste money on something that will become old quickly. I already have a gaming PC but I want to change to consoles.0

Don't buy either then, the gaming world is pretty cut throat and it wont be long before both are old news. As already said they have both gone over there estimated lifespan, and new slim models have been released recently. Not sure about sony but there are rumours microsoft will be releasing a new model around 2012, how true that is no one really knows.
As for which one to buy, comes down to what you want from it. If you want to play online with your friends, see which one they have. They both have pros and cons.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
Hmm OK, well I think I'm going to go ahead and get a 360.0

An interesting point to note is that for the first couple of years the PS3 was released, the Playstation 2 outsold the Playstation 3 by a considerable margin and new games were still being released. So you're not going to end up in the situation of buying a 360 now, a 720 being released in a couple of years and there being nobody to play with or any new games overnight.0 -
There wont be another Playstation console for about 4-5 years I think, but the xbox is getting pretty dated now, so I'd expect a new one in a year or so.
I own both and I think you would be better off with a PS3, more features and better piece of kit all round.0 -

I have to say I find that hilarious! The guy is coming from a gaming PC which is 100x more likely to quickly outdate and depreciate like a bacon sarnie in swine flu outbreak! a decent mouse can set you back £100 odd before you even get to the box itself.
Go for the 360 OP, great games, best online system, great lastability. Might not have the extra features of the POS3 but as a gaming machine it's a cracking bit of kit.
Kinect is good for party entertainment too. None of those silly wands to wave about!0 -
Forget the consoles themselves and look at the games line up.
Pick out all the games you'd like to play and buy the one which has the biggest selection.
Personally I dont think either will be releasing a new console for a while.0 -

how is the 360 getting old?
they have just released a new version and Kinect
have we had any gasmes on the PS3 yet that are far superior to anything the 360 can produce?
hardly the moves of a company who are about to release a new version.
I own both too before you go down that route0 -
both consoles have advantages over the other but from what I've seen produce pretty similar graphics and seem fairly well matched in ability.
I have a PS3 but got one when they were backwards compatible so wanted to keep using my ps2 games.....with hindsight, it wasn't such a big deal having the backwards compatibility because I rarely played the ps2 games on the new console.
Personally I'd say get the PS3 so you have the blu ray player if a new console is announced but like I said, the xbox swill have advantages over the ps3 eg better networking and integration with windows pc.
You decide what functions or games you want and buy the console that suits.
