who would i complain to ?

dd had her annual eye test at asda [nhs test] and was told she didnt need glasses anymore , she was very happy so fast forward a few months i notice she is getting more headaches and squinting so i take her to a different place and request a second opinion.her eyes havent got better they have gotten significantly worse and she now needs varifocals!
i have complained to asda and after 4 months of waiting have now recieved a reply that they think they have done nothing wrong .
i want to escalate this complaint but where to ? whats my next move ?

What result are you hoping to achieve from complaining? I hope not compensation for a free eye test and a few headaches, so is it to get the optician's name lodged with his trade body as incompetent, or to get ASDA to remove the service from stores, or the NHS to warn them they were mischarged by poor practice? If you have an objective in mind, then it'll be clearer who to complain to.

no i dont want compensation ,just them to accept they were in the wrong . i certainly wont go back there again and the only reason we went there in the 1st place was because she had seen a pair of glasses she liked as we went past !
  • varifocals? How old is she?
  • No Asda have done nothing wrong, eyes can deteriorate quickly and it was months (3, 4, 5??) between the tests.

The only time I have seen varifocals dispensed is from the hospital never from a high street Optician.

her eyes have not improved even on that basis her previous prescription should have continued at the very least ,but her eyes have deteriorated enough to change the prescription.

It's unusual for a child to require varifocals. This would indicate that she has a low level of "accomodation" - meaning poor/weak refocussing from distance to near, normally something very strong in this age group. I don't recall the last time in my practice that this was done. I'm not suggesting that the second eye examination is incorrect, but that this may be a bit more complex than you think and not just a case of the first examination being wrong or incompetant. The first Optician might not even have looked for this problem if she wasn't really complaining of any relevant symptoms, given how rare it is. Easy to say they should have done with the benefit of hindsight, but much depends on the symptoms reported and what she did on the day.

Basically, this may come down to a difference of professional opinion - I suspect you'll have a hard time getting anywhere with this, especially given the time between examinations.

I don't think it's the fact that she now needs varifocals that's the problem, it's the fact that they said that she no longer needed her old prescription. Her eyesight obviously hadn't got better so why did they say she no longer needed glasses?

Do you have the results? When I go to the opticians they give me a print-out.

It would appear to me that they have got something wrong and if you have the results it may be easier to see what.

I'm sorry but unless your an optician who has access to the eyetest you cannot possibly state that as a fact.

You wouldn't buy frozen peas at somewhere like Dolland and Atchinson (Opticians) Ltd, so why have an eye test at a supermarket?

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)
