  • This article is a bit american based, but there are loads of online courses you can do

  • Minimal Phonic Cues at http://www.mpconline.co.uk/ contains downloadable books in pdf format to help children and adults with their reading and spelling. It was written by a lecturer called Margaret Sanders in the 1970s and now she had made it all available for free. You can get a teacher's handbook, reading and spelling workbook, reading material, flashcards. It teaches in a traditional phonics way, which is really popular again nowadays.

Very handy if your kids are struggling a bit at school.

CoolGorilla do free phrase packs that you can download to your computer or mp3 player, if you have one. You can get them here: http://www.coolgorilla.com/free-ipod-software-languages.html
The 'Teach Yourself' cd's are quite good, your local library may have them? I recommend 'Instant Spanish' by Elizabeth Smith.

Thanks liz 545 but I was particularly looking for one that leads to some sort of qualification - but I think I'll be very lucky to find one!

    Lots of material here:

I found it when looking for info on how to read music.
  • Directgov is quite good for finding courses close to where you live or work - you can type in the subject you want to learn and your postcode and it tells you everything in your area. They're not all free but you can get full info on the costs and you'll find some are free.

Also there's loads of info about Career Development Loans and other ways of getting financial help for courses here:

Not as far as I can remember... I ran the Great Edinburgh Run, which is where I found out about it, but didn't think it was a requirement (I don't remember them asking when I signed up).

Beginners Spanish or French would be best.

Sorry, I've not cracked the qualification angle yet. But I did want you to know that outside the Internet, the BBC2 usually broadcast loads of language programmes on Tuesday mornings between 1am and 6am - check out:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/langtravel/

and select the language of your choice from the dropdown menu, and click search. It will give you the broadcast dates, times and course names. Five hours of video tape will keep you going for quite some time, when you are starting out. If you can complete just 3 of these courses, you should be able to walk into a certified scheme and walk it (after all that learning). good luck.
