If you are able to download podcasts, (I do via iTunes store) there are loads of subjects covered which allow you to learn via podcasts and/or linked websites.

They are not recognised courses, but most of them are free and produced by enthusiastic experts who love what they do. The standard of the podcasts is variable, but I have learnt quite a bit including improving my Photoshop skills, yoga, meditation, health and fitness :D

Not entirely free but if you live in Scotland you can get an Individual Learning Account (ILA) which gives you £200 to spend on courses if you earn under £15k or £100 if you earn over £15k. All you actually have to pay is the first £10 of the cost of the course. I'm currently taking a night class at a uni (so a good quality course) which costs £120 and with this it only cost me £10 - pretty good! I'm not sure if they run a similar scheme in England, Wales or N Ireland though. You can use the grant for pretty much any course at any college or uni as far as I know. Link for Scottish one pasted below:

The Open University has financial support for their courses if your circumstances are applicable. This can mean a course is free in some cases.

Also, they have now started making educational resources freely available through OpenLearn.

    OpenLearn provides:
    • online free learning material taken from Open University courses
    • state-of-the-art learner support
    • tools connecting learners with learners and learners with educators
    • learning media and technologies on a large scale

    OpenLearn does not:
    • require you to become an Open University student
    • grant degrees or award credits
    • provide access to the services available to students registered on Open University courses

    Welcome to MIT's OpenCourseWare

The Open University have launched their version of OCW. It's available here -> http://openlearn.open.ac.uk

It's only been up for about a week, and the number of modules available is still growing. There's a mix of both undergraduate and post-grad materials :) If you are feeling particularly clever, you can also visit their sister site labspace and help improve the modules that are already available :)

Beginners Spanish or French would be best. I know a little bit of French (GCSE level) but I think I'd be better to start from scratch because my GCSE's were a bit longer ago than I'd care to remember!

CoolGorilla do free phrase packs that you can download to your computer or mp3 player, if you have one. You can get them here: http://www.coolgorilla.com/free-ipod-software-languages.html
The 'Teach Yourself' cd's are quite good, your local library may have them? I recommend 'Instant Spanish' by Elizabeth Smith.
