can i use my cental heating ?

Been without water or heating now since 8 am yesterday (Christmas day ) :mad:There was a frozen pipe burst down the road and we seem to to be the only ones without any water. I phoned the water company and am still waiting for them to get back to me. They did say if it was frozen pipes it was our responsibility even if underground, is that right ?
It seems to much of a coincidence that there should be trouble down the road and we are without water.
Anyway, we have a combi boiler which heats the radiators. Will I be able to put the central heating on? There will be water in the system and we can't run any water off. In don't think we can but i don't want to sit in the freezing cold if it's not necessary. Haven't really a clue about these things.:o

Yes, if your combi is up to normal pressure then you can use it OK. Obviously the DHW side will not function though.
If the supply pipe is frozen on your property or downstream of the meter then yes it is your responsibility.

hope you now have water and are warm.
if not ,you can GENTLY defrost you pipe system by using a hair dryer aimed at and around in incoming pipes.it may take up to an hour but shold work.this is what the water companies advise.
i've had to do this every morning for the last two weeks, same as last year!
    good luck.

Not sure it is frozen pipes as they were doing a leak in the close on Christmas morning. We have been doing the hair-dryer thing but no luck. They phoned last night at 8-30 and said we were priority but we are still waiting. Think we may have gone into hypothermia if it hadn't been for that advice, may have saved our lives. All nice and warm now, if a bit smelly as can't get a wash.

is it sorted yet? .. it may be an air lock ... from the leak. Turn your cold tap in the kitchen on .. not fully, then turn the water on & off gently with the Internal Stop Tap.... if it is just an airlock it will drag the air through & you will have water again

Still not on, have tried that.the fella from the water place told us to do that. No joy. I am now convinced that it is not frozen pipes, well not indoors anyway. We have kept hot water bottles on the pipes and they feel warm to the touch. And the room is very warm. Ah well, see what tomorrow brings

Still no water and nobody from united utilities is getting back to me in spite of saying we were priority.
Called a plumber out in the end to see what it was,no sign of frost or damage to any of my pipes. He says it must be something they have done when fixing a burst pipe.It cost me £45 which i am determined to get back from UU. Have been on to them and lost it a bit, just don't know what else to do they just won't listen to me. The Liverpool Echo next I think.

I have replied on your other thread but I would still ask the plumber about the communication pipe as that is still your responsiblity. It is fine to go to the paper but make sure it really is UU fault first otherwise it does tend to look a little silly ( like when someone picks a country that has monsoons for a wedding and then goes during monsoon season and complains when they get wet)

I did suggest checking that the main stop tap is on as well as it might have been turned off during the work ?
