Have you been leaving your heating on 24/7 in this big freeze?

If you have an older type boiler with a hot water tank and gravity fed central heating, it could well be the case that the water temperature is being maintained by the boiler whenever the heating is on. So leaving the central heating on with the thermostat set low means the boiler is still firing up to heat the water, even when the thermostat doesn't cause the heating to come on.
I have that and certainly don't need the water to be constantly heated. The boiler only has one temperature control, which needs to be reasonably high for the central heating to perform.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. The tabloid newspapers do tend to report things like this. But remember, 3 cold winters do not make an ice age. I'm at least going to give it a few more years before I go investing in a snowmobile and 4x4
I actually got this info from a weather forum I am following. There are many weather experts on there who say the same.
I'm not getting a 4 x 4 but seriously considering winter tyres.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
Ours has been on at 18 degrees 24/7 for the past few weeks. When we settle down to watch TV in the evening, we have a snuggle blanket each - makes a big difference to the comfort level. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

I'm well pleased I had d/g installed in November - just in time
Also installed a programmable roomstat, which has really helped in keeping living-room temp steady. Previous simple roomstat was blipping the boiler on for short burns all evening.0 -

Brand new property with gas combi / thermostat and TRV's etc
Ours is propgrammed to come on 610 - 640 to warm the rads up in the bathroom for getting out of the shower and then we turn it on whenever we want it, if we are in we leave it on constant with the stat set to around 18, the room the stat is in only has 1 double radiator so takes ages to heat up which is why its so low. Havent made any special effort because of the cold snap, nothing has burst yet...0 -
Our heating is programmed to go off at 1030 at night and on at 0630 in the morning. During that time the bungalow temp. at the wall 'stat in the hall drops only from 19C to 16C when it's below zero outside but we are fully insulated - roof, wall cavities, under floors, double glazing - to 1997 Building Regs. levels.0
