Have you been leaving your heating on 24/7 in this big freeze?

Options
I am in no way adding to the "is it best to leave my heating on all the time or have it on timed" argument, but in this evil cold snap where we have seen night time temps as low as -20, have you been leaving your heating on or still having it on timed? I have left mine on 24/7 for the whole period of the freeze and had it on 15-20 degrees, turning the thermostat down to 15 through the night and when the house is unoccupied during the day, and up to 20 when we are in the house in the evening. I did my meter read on the gas yestersday and according to smartmeteruk website, I have used approx £120 gas since the 3rd Dec, which, I am very impressed with, when I look back at the same period last winter I was averaging about £120 per month anyway, and I reakon by the end of Dec I will be at about £170 ish, so i'd say that £50 or so extra is better than the hassle and possible expense of a burst pipe. What you guys been doing?

CC limits £26000

Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.

Mines on 24/7 because we had frozen pipes this year, in previous years the heating has been on low during sub zero spells all the time.

Up until this year that worked fine.

Yes, on low constantly, because we're cold otherwise. :D

Ours was on all night when the night time temps were well below zero, not just -1 or -2. Dont usually do this but the whole house takes ages to heat if you dont leave it on. Plus we were worried about burst pipes. This is the first year we've had to do this.

Yep the C/H, H/W controller is 'on' for C/H and the programmable roomstat has froststat enabled for when I was away before Xmas.

The temp profile for 23:to 07:00 is 14, although I've never been aware the boiler has been fired.

  • I now have mine programmed to come on all the time, its a new boiler so it has a very intricate timer, I have programmed it to be on 7c overnight and its ok, the last 3 months gas and electric was £300 so not too bad considering the price hikes. I've decided to spend money and stay warm :)

I been leaving my stove in 24/7 for the last month but only because I can't be bothered having to keep lighting it. The other heating isn't even timed. Just switched on when home and off before I go to bed at night. No problems at all. Frozen pipe prevention is more about regular water flow and decent pipe lagging/insulation than high house temps.

We have had our heating on all the time the last three winters or so because we discovered after having been away one year it takes five hours on high for the house to start to feel warm. We have stone walls and once they are warm we need only minimal heating to keep them that way. It has been higher than previous years this year because the temps have been lower for longer but it has only cost us an extra £10 a week as we have a prepaid meter. We have a three bed end terrace with an attic.
  • Yes... been leaving mine on 24/7 too. Live in an old rented house with no double/secondary glazing or effective insulation.

Yes. Mines been on 24/7 for the past couple of weeks. My partner is the biggest cold blow out! She even has the heating on full in the summer months. I always tell her she wouldn't if she paid the bills!
