sweetcarer you are an absolute star, i think i've found him. there was only one person of his name who died in 1914 according to their site and it even let me print off a memorial photo of the cemetery hes buried in. My mil will be so touched when i take it round to her. i really cant thank you enough. id tried loads of site but ever been on that one.

going to do a few rows now im back home

I found a few uncles that died during the wars with the website - I thought it was really good that you can get a copy of the cemetery picture and notes of the grave - it really comforted my formermother in law when we found her brother - he was only 20 when he died in Italy and she had never seen his grave and when she went to Italy on holiday she made a journey to the grave and was able to find it right away with info I had found. I am so happy you managed to find him - makes me feel better about my day.

    Kind wishes

    sweetcarer ;)

Can you get RSI from cross-stitching? My arm hurts, like a burning pain going from my thumb and up my arm. It was so bad last night I had to wear one of those elastic support bandages and take a painkiller before I could sleep. It's not too bad at the moment but I think I will have to take a break from stitching for a day or two

Has anyone else had this, and what did you do about it?

I had problems a few years ago and had to stop doing xstitch for a while. I then discovered gold needles and I haven't looked back. I have had no problems since using my trusted gold needle.

It's worth giving it a go there not too dear. Hope it helps.

    I still haven't picked up a needle.

I think it's going to have to wait 'til after May. I have the whole month off work - but I'm off on my mid-life crisis holiday....the Trans-Siberian Express. I doubt I'll do a lot of cross stitch in Siberia. I'll be too busy taking photos :)

Right now, work is horrid - trying to get the end of the year tied up, reports written etc. etc.

But it's only about six weeks 'til the holiday *keep thinking of the holiday*...

update - i'm half way through the backstitch twiddly bits on the wedding sampler, so HAVE to now chart the words - if i do more backstitch then i wont be able to adjust it if the words come out longer than the original. i had a bad day at work (end of FYear reports, winding up before funding ends, HR winging about redeployment meetings - err let me do my job first! - diary spiriling out of control and so very confused about how to salvage it) so couldnt face charting, so just did some fill on my faithful cupcake standby.

nmm - where were we all? well, i was stitiching, for once! i've got a good roll on with the wedding sampler:D
    - it looks like you had a really nice day out - great pics! you could send some good comedy/birthday emails with captions above the meercats! but what on earth is the critter in the first two photos? he looks kinda like a Giant guinea pig?!?

smilyT - i've had RSI before, due to typing, and sometimes get a twinge if i stitch too much. with me it's pain in around the bones on the back of my hand and in the muscle under my wrist. i stretch my hand out in the other direction, rub in tigerbalm or deep heat, and put the work down for a day or two. i'm very cautious though as i've a dear friend whose having carpel tunnel ops due to the pain and disability of bad wrists due to years and years of sewing with embroiders guild.

ERICS MUM awe, i'm sorry to hear your mum is still in hospital, but i'm glad she's getting tests and care and they didnt fob you off. that scene is lovely, and you're making really good progress.

    Hello all,

I was wondering if you could help me with a cross stitch query.

I have been doing cross stitch for a few years and have always used aida. Yesterday I went out and bought some evenweave material and that is what a magazine recommended for the project. I am having a really hard time finding the holes! It seems once I have done a couple of rows the material gets all bunched up and you have to really scrutinise the fabric to find the next hole for the stitch.

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this? Or do I just have to work harder!

    Thanks. X

Hiya, sorry not been around for a while had a hectic few weeks but have been reading even if not posting.
I haven't gotten any real stitching done for a while as I am spending most nights speaking to a friend over the net who is splitting from her husband and generally having a rough time. I had a minor op yesterday, not a great thing but every cloud and all that. Whilst waiting around to be discharged yesterday I got a bit of my small bear project done, and because I had a general anaesthetic I am not allowed to do anything active today so am spending the time on my tiger and cubs. Yay, not had a stitchy day for such a long time!
I will hopefully post some progress later.

Kezybabe - there are some great projects you have finished and the Piglet cushion is fantastic. I'd love to do that for my mum one day.

What count of evenweave do you have? I have only ever used 28 count, but stitched over 2 threads...so it works out as 14 count. A lot of Haaven and Earth designs use 25 count and stitch over 1 thread, but I would go cross eyed with that, so I am using 28 count over two, and enjoying the larger-sized design!!!

A lot of folk mark out 10x10 squares with marker pen (either fade-away or washable). I have had a couple of goes, but still not on very well with that...must try harder!!

If your work is bunching up...are you pulling your threads too tight?? Do you use a frame of a hoop...wouldn't work without one!! That will help you with your tension.

    Hope this helps. x

STILL not done any stitching, but determined to get some done today...promise!! :o

Lovely work everyone...loving the CR Mackintosh Wedding Sampler Shelly...is a ;);) possible?? I hope to make me bedroom up in CR Mac style, and might get my a**e into gear and stitch a wedding sampler for me and DH...might get it done for our 30th Anniversary in two years time...:rotfl:

I was thinking the same as Keiss. If it's bunching up I can only think you are pulling the thread too tight.
I used evenweave for the first time last year and I had to be much more gentle with it compared to aida.
