Those finished pieces are gorgeous. It seems everyone has been stitching hard.
The mention of Titanic by mrs-moneypenny made me realise I've not put an updated pic on for about 10 days so i'll try and get them on here now (lots of problems before so you may only get the flickr links!).
At the moment I've had to abandon Titanic again as the threads finally arrived for the m-i-l Kingfisher Plate yesterday. They are both to be finished by the end of Feb now.

These are the frames I use and love them.....even more so now I have the floor stand too!
Anyway, what I do when starting is find the centre of the fabric and mark it. Then lay the edge of your fabric on top of the groove that the clips clip into then clip the clips on. Don't go too close to the edge of the fabric though because it will slip out either when you tension the fabric or just over time. I try to use a line of holes as a guide to keep the fabric straight when clipping because this helps keeps even tension when stitching.
Do the same on other side.
Then you come to roll up and tension the fabric. I loosely roll mine so that the fabric has an even amount on each side bar and I can see my centre mark and tighten one set of nuts. Then I unroll one side bar, roll it properly (more tighter) and tighten the nuts. Do the same the other side and you should have the centre and a nice tension to your fabric.
Don't roll the bars too tightly though because if you leave your work too tightly rolled, over time the fabric holes will be stretched (been there, done that and learned my lesson...lol) I tighten mine just so there is a slight 'bounce' to the fabric when I touch it.
They are quite big to use and holding them by hand will hurt after a while. Before I got my stand I had to rest the frame on a lowish table so if you have something to lean on it's much easier to use.
I hope that makes senseIf not let me know which bit/s don't and I'll try to help more
