Happy Christmas all,
Hope Santa's been kind to you all
We're looking through the Christmas sales and are tossing up between a couple of 42" plasma TVs - just wondered if you folks had any comments one way or the other:
PANASONIC VIERA TX-P42C2B 42" HD Ready Plasma TV
£349 from Currys or Dixons
Bush 42 Inch HD Ready Plasma TV
£299 from Argos
Would very much appreciate your advice,
Simon

is this a real question?
'BUSH' vs a proper brand name??
deffo the panasonic.
Comet have a better LCD tv for sale though, £399, Sony, 40", with Freeview HD - and its 'full' HD not just the basic 720p hd ready like the ones you mentioned (although it is more expensive).
Extra £50 and means you'll never need to get sky hd or w/e as the freeview hd tuner is built in0 -
Panasonic all the way. Bought the 37" version of this a few months ago from JL for the same price but including a 5 year warranty (now OOS). Only one Scart and two HDMI's so a bit limited on connectivity but the picture is great.
The Bush will be a rebadged cheapy.0 -
Do you specifically want a plasma.
Look at this. LG LCD 42" FULL HD.

Doesn't make a difference. Even on a 42" one, you'd need to be watching closer than 6ft to get the benefit of going from 720p to 1080p and in addition to that, Freeview/Freesat HD, Sky HD and Virgin HD don't do 1080p.
Here's the Lechner distance chart which shows how close you need to be to a TV of a set size to get the benefit of 1080i/1080p over 720p, based on the eyes ability to distinguish resolution:
1080i/p
• 28-inch set: 3.7 feet
• 32-inch set: 4.2 feet
• 37-inch set: 4.8 feet
• 40-inch set: 5.2 feet
• 42-inch set: 5.5 feet
• 46-inch set: 6 feet
• 50-inch set: 6.5 feet
• 52-inch set: 6.8 feet
• 60-inch set: 7.8 feet
• 63-inch set: 8.2 feet
• 70-inch set: 9.2 feet0 -

I'd rather note the reviews on AVForums where they're done by people who actually only test TVs and do ISF calibration as opposed to a site that tests everything thats powered by electric.
You'll note in the AV Forums list of reviews, the main difference between LCD and Plasma is the fact that even though they review 50% more LCD TVs than Plasmas, very few LCD get "Excellent" rating 6 out 42 of LCD TVs get Excellent rating compared with 13 out of 26 Plasmas with one plasma getting "Reference".0 -
Panasonic gets my vote too.0

Hi there - I have been given the opinion that Panasonic is a good make - as is Samsung...
I dont know where youa re looking - but I tend to always head for www.richersounds.co.uk as they have really great prices and also are really helpful and knowledgeable - not people who know a little about a lot of electrical appliances - they only deal in sound and vision....
They've got some good deals going on there now and they are open tomorrow!
LEt me know how you get on - we are having exactly the same search tomorrow with our Christmas money!!0
