Yet another problem which will happily be solved when cheques are finally gotten rid of.
Why are you using cheques when they're just overall such a pain in the !!!!?urs sinserly,

I wrote a cheque for £65.00 on 03.12.2010 from my Nat West current account. I made the cheque payable to myself because I wanted to transfer some money into my post office account. I paid the cheque into the post office account using a counterfoil slip which was stamped by the post office cashier.
I checked my post office account a few days later but only £60 had been credited to this account. I then printed a mini statement for my Nat West account and only £60 had been withdrawn. A few days later on one of my days off work I popped into Nat West to request a copy of my cheque, I was informed this would be posted to me.
As of today I had still not received the copy of my cheque. I again went into Nat West bank to enquire and spoke to the same female enquiry desk person as previously who informed me that she had viewed the cheque personally and stated that the five on the £65 (the amount that I had hand written on the cheque ) looked like an O and that an error had been made for which she apologised.
I replied that I had written Sixty Five Pounds Only then £65.00 in the box.
Again she replied that the five on the £65.00 looked like an O and that I should be more careful in future and try to make the numbers more clearer. I reiterated that I had written Sixty Five Pounds Only to confirm the amount beside the £65.00.
I wanted to pay £65 into my post office account but only £60 has been paid in. The £5 shortage could have made me overdrawn!
Should I be entitled to any compensation?
Many thanks in advance for all replies.
The 5 must have really looked like a 0. At the Post Office, cheques are checked at least twice by the cashier and at least once by the manager before they're sent to be processed. I'm surprised no one at the branch noticed the numbers didn't match the words, but it does happen.
I'm not sure how the £5 difference could have made you overdrawn. The Post Office doesn't offer any accounts with an overdraft.0
