My £65.00 Nat West cheque, please advise.

I wrote a cheque for £65.00 on 03.12.2010 from my Nat West current account. I made the cheque payable to myself because I wanted to transfer some money into my post office account. I paid the cheque into the post office account using a counterfoil slip which was stamped by the post office cashier.
I checked my post office account a few days later but only £60 had been credited to this account. I then printed a mini statement for my Nat West account and only £60 had been withdrawn. A few days later on one of my days off work I popped into Nat West to request a copy of my cheque, I was informed this would be posted to me.
As of today I had still not received the copy of my cheque. I again went into Nat West bank to enquire and spoke to the same female enquiry desk person as previously who informed me that she had viewed the cheque personally and stated that the five on the £65 (the amount that I had hand written on the cheque ) looked like an O and that an error had been made for which she apologised.
I replied that I had written Sixty Five Pounds Only then £65.00 in the box.
Again she replied that the five on the £65.00 looked like an O and that I should be more careful in future and try to make the numbers more clearer. I reiterated that I had written Sixty Five Pounds Only to confirm the amount beside the £65.00.
I wanted to pay £65 into my post office account but only £60 has been paid in. The £5 shortage could have made me overdrawn!
Should I be entitled to any compensation?
Many thanks in advance for all replies.

About as much chance.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
In this digital age of banking the computers and people dont take much notice of the words but the numbers so it does happen i doubt you would get any compensation though as paying less would not result in you being overdrawn if it was the other way round then you might have.0

Thank god I don't have to count hundreds of cheques a week any more. :T
I've seen all sorts of stupidly written cheques, & tbh, more variations on what you would imagine to be a simple task (write the same number both in words & digits) than I ever knew existed..0 -

Compliments returnedOf course you should write to them asking for compensation, ignore the grumps, it is your right, section six , subsection 4 of the missaplication of funds act 1979.
Let us know how you get on.
Thank you for your reply. I asked the original question as this is the second time a similar event happened. The first time was when I sent a cheque to a gas company earlier in the year ( my gas bill was £286.00 ) when I was unemployed. I arranged to pay half my gas bill (the other half would be paid 30 days later ) I sent a cheque for £146.00 with the gas bill counterfoil slip and filled in £146.00 on the slip. When the cheque was presented to my bank they extracted the whole £286.00.
Thus the reason for my original post. Its not the amounts involved its the principle and service.0 -
They don't check words and numbers agreeing unless the cheque is over a certain amount.......well, this was the case years ago - they also don't check cheques for signatures etc again unless over a certain amount.
I know this because I wrote a cheque for over £1k from my boyfriends account thinking it was my cheque book and it cleared and he went overdrawn - a friend worked at my bank and told me about what they do/don't do.
As you've had the same amount debited and credited - and it's only £5 is it that big a deal?0
