Cheapest LEGAL Photoshop?

A new version of Photoshop is required in the badger's sett. The current one is too old to buy an upgrade for and the average price seems to be over £600, which is... excessive (particularly as the thieves at Adobe charge a lot less for the same download if you're in the USA).
Any legal MSE suggestions would be very much appreciated!

If you know any students or teachers they can get a massive discount (not completely ethical, but still).
Other than that you'll be lucky to get anything cheaper, new version won't be out until at least October 2012 (educated guess).0 -

No, I'm afraid it does need to be 'the real thing' - GIMP and others all have their points but there are some things that only Photoshop will do - which is why Adobe can try to fleece its UK customers.0 -
