Samsung Galaxy S Orange Android 2.2

Hi All,

I've finally decided that I've had enough of waiting for Orange to release 2.2 for the Galaxy S (especially with 2.3 being upon us). Partly because I've had enough of the crap GPS. My old nokia 5800 had breat GPS and do use it a fair bit and find it annoying that on my galaxy it is useless!!

I'm a complete novice with regards to "rooting" etc so was wondering if someone could point to the easiest to follow Layman guide to getting 2.2 on my phone please?

Are there any risks etc or is it pretty easy?

Ta in advance

  • it should have been updated already

you can use the samsung kies feature to force the update

even my sons wildfire has 2.2 on it

my galaxy from voda has 2.2 on it i did not do anuthing
  • I used an Original Rom from here http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s-all-things-root/
  • Kies Samsung does not work with Mac, but what is worse than not running Windows via Bootcamp or Vertual box. In fact Kies is a waste of space, the software writer made no attempt to TYO allow users to decouple the construction in relation to e-mail programs and calendar from Microsoft. The point of getting a phone based on open protocol systems is that users like myself are not using Microsoft for email and calendars, in fact, to vertually everything. Samsung Comon, they pull their fingers out and give us half through the Internet on the phone itself to update the operating system and liaison with or (Mac) computer device again if released. If you want to know what is needed just look at the iPhone, though, that iTunes would rather not have another thank you very much.

If you've got the recovery (3 button combo) on your phone then even if something goes wrong you should be able to recover, if you haven't got it then you should think twice about flashing
  • Don't really understand half of what has just been said

When I connect to Kies and ask to check for an update it says there is not one

    What is a Rom?

and what is a 3 button recovery?

As I said, I'm a complete Layman so a guide somewhere would be good

    Thanks
  • Hi

i just tried following this guide

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853950

using odin and got to the pass stage. Now my phone has gone off and won't turn on!!

Ahh am a complete novice, any help please??

    Thanks
  • Try rebooting holding down the volume key, home key and power button. This take you into recover mode, wipe cache/user data - DELETES ALL YOUR DATA! and the re-do install via ODIN.
  • While previously I could enter download mode, now holding down the 3 buttons doesn't work at all. powering on at all doesn't work, permanent black screen!

    Thanks though

Complete novice do not flash your phone until you fully understand the methods . It invalidates your warranty .
Reflash and try a different firmware rom .

Loads of FAQs etc on the XDA site re bricked phones failed installs etc .

  • thanks for your constructive comment JJ Egan but as I said, I can not turn the phone on, I can not get 3 button recovery or 3 button download method to work, and I can not seem to find methods for this so if you can offer constructive help that'd be appreciated.

We all have to try something for the first time, I tried thinking I understood what was going on, clearly it went wrong

    Thanks
