Yes, they don't want to be seen to be making a profit from selling carrier bags.
If they charged for carrier bags, and kept the money, the press could jump on them for making a profit from the carrier bags. By giving the money to charity they can say they are doing their bit for the environment but not profiting from it because they give the proceeds to charity.
And if you look at the second link you provided, you will see it says "* All of the 1.85p profit from the sale of single use food carrier bags are donated to Groundwork."
That's just the profit, not the cost of buying and transporting the bags.
So they have gone from giving us free bags, and shouldering the cost themselves, to charging us for the bags but keeping the cost of buying/transporting them. So, supplying us with carrier bags now costs them nothing, and they can take the moral high ground by saying the profits all go to charity.
While NOT now having the expense of buying/transporting them. Which will increase their profits as they no longer have the expense of giving away free bags.
It's no different to them charging an admission fee, to cover the cost of the electricity bill for the shop. Then giving any profits from it to charity.
They may be giving the profits to charity, but they aren't paying their electricity bill any more, we are!0 -
You can afford to shop at M&S, yet moan about a 5p carrier bag charge?
Sometimes its not about the cost but about the principle of it, To charge for a carrier bag after you have spent over £70 seems abit mean to me & surely as it was a special order it should have come in something suitable to carry it home in0 -

I agree with you !.....I would write/ e-mail M&S and tell them about the price hike !, hopefully they will give you some money back !....I hope you enjoyed it0 -
I had a similar experience last year, not a £70 one though admittedly! I ordered the free range crown and it has a price range, mine ended up over the highest price, but as hubby collected it and didnt have much time of his parking meter, he just paid for it.
This year I bought a free range turkey crown from M&S in store when they first came into stock at the end of November, they are usually at an introductory price then so I got it at a discount, think it was 22.99? and put it in the freezer. It was enough for 2 full meals for 4 of us and as our children are pre teens and teen they eat as much as an adult pretty much. Was pretty much the same size as the one I had ordered and paid much more for last year, so I will buy in store again.
I have bought the 'for life' bags from M&S at 10p, but to be fair I often nip in on spec or when Ive not planned to around Christmas and forget them, so get stung for another 5p ...I know all about the environmental side of it, but really we are advertising for them carrying their bags around, they should pay me!
Im very careful all year with my food budget, and save up reward points and any M&S vouchers I get for my birthday etc (I always ask for them if people ask!) and hubby got a M&S reward card from work; for my Christmas food shop, as we all love their food, and I do think it is your business if you want to spend there on a turkey etc, seems a bit unfair to me for people to make comments about people being able to afford to shop at M&S!, as it is the principal of being charged for bags when you have just spent a lot that is the point I thinkit certainly irritates me, it makes me want to take in a pile of Sainsburys bags and start loading them up at the M&S checkout!
I agree with what others have said about emailing their CS, as now the dust has settled after Christmas you may get something back x0 -
Just as a matter of interest, has anyone ever tried e-mailing M&S? I ask, because I had intended to do this very thing (about something else) and I went round and round in circles on their website and never did find a way to do so. They don't even have a 'contact us' link.0

Oh, poor old soul - getting past it!0

the turkeys are from £49.50 and have a weight range in the catalogue. You obviously got the higher weight range turkey. If youre not very happy, don't buy your turkey from marks and spencers.!! Mine was frozen, bronze, 20.00 from tesco, Lovely!!0
