I see your point but what other jobs require consistent concentration ?.
1. Bus/coach driver
2. HGV Driver
3. Surgeon
List goes on
Your lever pulling and nothing more. You watch for signals as motorists look for traffic lights. You stop at stations like we do petrol stations.
You are stuck to 2 massive metal rails so you can't really deviate can you unless the track switches.
Stop making out it's massively different from other occupations, or that you need brains of einstein to do it
Once you've learnt the signals/signs it really would be like driving with your eyes closedIf Adam and Eve were created first
.Does that mean we are all inbred0 -

Hahaha...... very funny !:D Best laugh I've had in ages !
Read my post again and you will see that I have never said it takes Einstein to do it - just the relevant skills that not everybody has.
Amazing how you can comment on something that you know nothing about.
Oh by the way, we carry up to 800/900 passengers at a time, I think that's called responsibility !!Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -

My mate is a tube driver so tells me how easy it is. I've been in the cab whilst in service so it isn't difficult.
The DLR is computerised and that carries thousnads of passengers a day.
What skills would one really need in all honestly.
1. Eyesight - for the ability to see signals
2. An arm - To push the lever
3. Voice - To drone out what the next stop is in the most annoying voice ever
4. Greed - The ability to want, want, want for lets face it an easy job
Cruise ship captains carry thousands also.. Big deal.. Your not giving them a big hug to keep them safe are you. No they sit.. you lever push.. they depart.. It's figures nothing moreIf Adam and Eve were created first

Rossy - what do you do ?
I am a mainline train driver not a tube driver.
The skills are pre-determined and as I have said before the majority fail it.
The skills you outline are pathetic especially the greed one - wouldn't you like to earn more than you do already ?
By the way, good discussion !Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -

I currently work for London busses as a controller managing 27 bus routes accross certain areas of London. that includes over 600 busses shared between 3 people.
I hold a PCV/HGV category but stay in this job as like you say the money is good.
What skills do you have that many don't.. Please state rather then continually try to portray train/tube drivers as a specialist breed of a human being.
anyone can learn to fly a plane, same goes for driving a train. If Adam and Eve were created first

I'm playing devils advocate here but maybe the tube drivers are the bright ones ??!! Doing such an easy job for huge amounts of undeserved pay with benefits immeasurable - then that makes everyone else thick fools for doing harder jobs for less pay !!!!! (Tongue firmly stuck in cheek !!)
Well.. i guess here's the biggest problem of them all. The public knows it is an well paid job for the required qualifications and that it has good perks and benefits. Even after that, your union wants MORE. When the public is paying your salary through inflated tube prices and then getting a reduced service at essential times (going on strike on boxing day.. why??).0 -

Have a read of my earlier posts - I have done that already.
http://www.traindriver.net/Assessment.html or http://www.traindrivertrainee.com/Stage2-Train-Driver-assessement.html describe it better than I can.
You need to have all the skills - it really is luck if you have them all. some do, some don't. Most don't.
As I have put, 317 applications means one driver.
Training approx 12 months, divided into rules, traction, practical handling and routes with exams all along the way. The final exam is over five days and lasts about 35 hours. Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -

ok ... sorry Richardvc.. thanks for not going on strike! I guess that's the only good part of my commute each day - i can usually rely on my first capital connect train to never be on strike.
Sadly, i can usually also rely on extreme overcrowding and poor timetable performance when its bad weather0 -

Um the bad weather.... it does cause some problems !
I don't work for FCC but a company who runs along the same routes south of London.
Sadly, having a third rail (electric rail) in the South, whilst a cheaper option was deemed out of date one hundred years ago !!!
And with the greatest respect to Network Rail, it is nigh impossible to clear all the routes successfully after a bout of snow.
We are attempting to run a 21st century railway on 19th century infrastructure and until that changes nothing else will. Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0
