Car Insurance refused because of too many claims

I have just recieved a letter from my car insurance company to say that they cannot renew my insurance in January because I have had 3 claims in the last year (including one of vandalism) and 3 claims in previous 4 years totalling 6 claims in the last 5 years.
I rang a few companys and most say the cant insure me and one quoted £2000. Can anyone give advice or suggestions to help with my situation?

  • I would talk to a local broker but in truth, you might struggle to get much lower than that. With a record of numerous claims, it's not surprising that an insurer wouldn't want to take on such a risk, and that those that are prepared to will want a big premium for doing so.

Were the claims accidents (apart from the vandalism one) or did you just claim for every minor incident?

Im so sorry for this.....but you just made me chuckle.....

I read your post and noticed that you say you have had 6 claims over the past 5 years....and then i noticed that your user name was carefulcath !!!!!!!!!

Im sorry , i understand you have just been unlucky and im by no means making light of your situation , but the name you chose was funny.
The loopy one has gone :j
  • yes they were all accidents and my fault except for one which was a hit and run.

With an average of one fault claim every year I’m surprised the quote is only £2k.

They must be working on the basis that the average person has 5 accidents in their lifetime and you’ve had all yours already so can be expected to be claim free for the rest of your driving career.

I’d snatch their hand off before they change their mind

I know its the wrong market probably but you tried ALL the comparison sites? The direct insurers (Direct Line, Aviva) etc... brokers etc.. If you can't beat that price then ... your gunna have to pay it =/!

So 5/6 claims were your fault, and you're wondering why your insurance is going up?

They see you as a liability, sorry to say.

I would try a broker and/or comparison sites.
Don't give your real email or phone number to comparison sites.

Other than that, as others have said, that's the price your going to have to pay for havig lots of fault accidents.

You could potentially consider not driving for a while but that depends on your access to public transport.
I don't think a lot of people realise that private transport really is very expensive when you add up - depreciation (cost of vehicle), insurance, tax, mot, routing servicing, repairs, parking, petrol, breakdown etc.

I am currently operating without a car and I would encourage you to think about your other options (mine are husbands car, motorbikes, train, bus, pedal cycle, walking) as there may be a few alternatives if you don't live out in the stix.

You'd need to go to a specialist broker but £2,000 sounds about right for your claims history. Sorry... I'm in the same boat with a conviction it looks like I'll just have to wait out the 5 years before I can answer No to the question and get insurance.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Be careful about the "have you ever been refused insurance question".

I am not that clear on what counts as a refusal (in this case they declined to renew), but I know it's important to get it right.
A broker would know this and they carry liability insurance too (which means if they get it wrong they have insurance to cover the costs).

So if you are going DIY and not using a broker make sure you answer the questions correctly.
