Home heating oil.

Save yourself the £6-7K
Spend £2K on double glazing.
Spend £50 doubling the thickness of the insulation in your attic (whatever it currently is!)
Spend £1K insulating your walls (if cavity and not already done) or on internal insulation if solid (stone?) walls.
Install rad stats and only heat rooms you use.
This will be far more effective than switching from (expensive) oil to (expensive) gas.
The following quote is from Jeff Howell who, in the Sunday Telegraph for many years now, has been one of the tiny handful to tell the truth about home improvements.
"The only problem is, double glazing requires energy to manufacture and install, and the pay-back period, in terms of both energy and money, is very long. Taking the average British home, and replacing its existing windows with new double-glazed units, it would probably take around one hundred years of reduced heating bills to cover the cost of the installation."

I agree, and you don`t have to strip and repaint them either. No more ice on the inside of the windows too!If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you! :dance:0

Get yourself down to Primark: Wooly Jumpers £2.
Seriously why move to gas? It's more convenient and momentarily cheaper - but people have short memories. Around 10 years ago people I know stampeded into oil because it was much cheaper than gas, using the exact same logic you have applied above with respect to pay back times. It's utter nonsense. Oil was significantly cheaper before because the Russians were messing about with the Ukranians and using their enormous gas supply to Europe to gain political leverage; gas is cheaper today because they arn't doing this any longer and because the middle east is in a mess.
You could end up switching to gas, the middle east will sort itself out and increase production, whilst the Russians attack Chechneya again. Will you then be sitting with your new gas system doing calculations on how quickly you can get back your oil investment? Honestly you've already got solar and solid fuel what on earth are you worrying about?0 -
