Is this the Windows 7 starter version?
    Yes it is, SEE HERE.

My friend is buying it for her granddaughter who is just starting a course at a technical college. It will be used for WP, mail and notes.

Thanks for the responses so far.

I will suggest waiting 'till the sales and try and pick up one with more memory. I like the advice on getting rid of unnecessary features.

OK, I'll be more explicit - it's in //Extended Support// not mainstream support. It gets security hotfixes but little-to-no active development until 2014 sometime (and we're just about 2011 already!) after which time you're stuck with asking your system manufacturer for help.

Win 7 is still at the start of its Mainstream support phase meaning it is still going to have full support for probably long beyond the useful life of the hardware.

Or by then you can get W7 after they've ironed all the early bugs out ;)

By 2014, no doubt Win 7 will be out of date as well.

And this is, in all honesty, the real issue - with windows 8 already being spoken about, by the time XP is totally unsupported, is it going to be a case of bypass W7 altogether and go straight to 8  Only time will tell.......

Not gonna be able to do much with 1GB ram remember thats shared with graphics and sound. So its going to be poor performance.

I'd like to go with the crowd and vote 7 because it is so good, but in my mind I have to say xp. While 7 is great on multi core with Gig's of ram, on a smaller cpu with little memory think xp would perform better.
