I am looking at the Samsung N130 and notice that it is available with XP or W7. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each one?
Both have 1GB memory.

New computers cannot be sold with windows XP, unless it is XP embeded.
1GB ram is a bit weedy, but W7 should be fine, but id prefer 2Gb0 -
Windows 7 is the (current) future, so unless you have a deep passion for a somewhat obsolete operating system, and can actually obtain it, then Windows 7 (Home Premium or Professional) is to be preferred, IMNVHO, with 2 or 3 GB of memory as AlexMole partly suggests.0

Windows 7. XP is now a decade old OS with more security holes than an open prison with an hourly bus service and all the guards on fag break..0

1GB does seem a little miserly.
I would go for a better spec before choosing the operating system, and as Windows 7 is the current flavour I would go with that. (If I was using a Windows machine)0 -
I would agree that win 7 is the better option, however would recommend you look at getting additional RM, or a machine that is upgradeable..
Also worth checking how the RAM is allocated. Some manufacturers will fill all slots with smaller amounts of RAM, ie 2 x 512 instead of 1 x 1gb.
This means that when you want to upgrade you have to remove some of what is already installed.
Hope this helps0 -

yeah, but it's still NICE
...and I only get asked to fix XP and Vista systems, so vested interest

Opt for Windows 7. It is a pretty usable operating system. Consult the internet for tips on turning off unnecessary stuff, and you should be able to live within your 1Gb of RAM, although more would be better.
Think about it, do you really need everything on the screen to be 3D or animated or translucent? Clearly not if you are happy with Win XP. Turning all that stuff off mostly saves CPU (processor) power, but it will use up a bit less memory too. I've got a 2GHz processor and 4GB RAM, but I still have the display set to look much like it did in XP days. There are other, less visible things you can dispense with to save memory too. Do some research on the web.0 -
Opt for Win 7 in this case / add another gig of ram /:cool:BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

Is this the Windows 7 starter version?0

Probably max 2gb but not sure (i've n140) it will be starter edition too so the aero stuff will not be available. I use dual boot with win 7/ubuntu nrm on my 2 gb . It ain't the fastest box but it is fine for portability and most tasks eg Windows Office / Open Office surfing , you tube / email etc. I use avast too on the win 7 boot and battery life is fine.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex .
