Aw I think that's a little sad. I think the fun and excitement of a 7 year old believing in something as magical as Father Christmas is lovely to watch.

I wouldn't tell him the truth and try to keep it going as long as possible.

It's ok - I deserved it lol I snitched on him, dogs tooth fell out, he put it under his pillow to "trick" the tooth fairy. I told mum, Mum later that night put a dog biscuit under his pillow with a note saying he was naughty lol

Another situation where school think it is ok to spoil the magic of childhood. They can teach about the poor without mentioning Christmas, surely.

Saying parents send money is just the same thing - Santa must be a very bad person to discriminate between rich and poor. Reinforcing the fact that it is ok to have a downer on the poor.

I like the "different religion" idea.

I would of gone with the different religion myself.
    Had my amazing little girlie 08/12/2007 - 11 days late! 9lbs 3oz
My second little girl entered the world 20/03/2010 - 11 days late! 8lbs 4oz
    Sea
    led pot challenge 4 - 332
    Make £11k in 2011 £0/£11000 - 0%
    And lots of other challenges!
  • I told my children that Santa filled their stockings & all other presents were paid for & that Santa just delivered the presents.

Never let success go to your head, never let failure go to your heart.
  • my stepson once asked the same question when he overheard me donating a present of new clothes to the child I sponsor in Africa (I'm south African) and I said that sometimes Santa can be very busy delivering presents to children all around the world so he asks a few special people to help him out by sending presents to children in Africa and India as they are so far away on the globe.

He bought the excuse and last year he figured it out and was a little sad that his bubble had popped thinking I was nominated by santa to help out! But he insisted I still send a gift to the charity this year! Hopefully he'll keep the tradition going when he gets older!

We've always believed that santa only filled our stockings. All the lables are read out and clearly say 'love mum and dad' etc so we've always known that wrapped presents are bought by people for us.

All that santa brought was our stockings

DS1 (7yrs) keeps asking me this after studying the poor in Africa at school and also being told that some children in this country get no presents.

So far I've skirted around it but how do I give him an answer?

    TIA xx

Just wanted to say that your son sounds like such an adorable, thoughtful and caring little boy! :)

mommyme - That tooth fairy dog biscuit story is absolutely brilliant - love it! :rotfl:
  • I think the whole religion one might be a bit far - He may then start asking further questions about different religions that you cant answer there and then.

Could you speak to his teacher and ask what they are telling them in school? Chances are, if you havent answered his question he may have asked them already?

(Madget - my brother didnt think it was very funny but i can remember stood crying with laughter at his disappointment! :rotfl: hehehe serves him right for trying to pull a fast one! )
  • I've told mine that we get the bill in the new year for Santa's presents, cause he has to pay his elves after all ;)
  • I would suggest the other religions.

However if you son is very in to the idea of giving the poor a Christmas present, you could look at doing a shoe box next year.

We did 5 this year and my two aged 6 and 3 loved it. We went to the local equivalent to the £1 store and they loved getting a mass of things to put in their boxes.
