Flybe will only give you the same baggage allowance as for the long-haul sector if the sector they fly you on is an international journey.
An example to clarify this: I investigated a journey that would be Exeter to Manchester on Flybe, to connect with an Air France flight to Africa (via Paris). Since Exeter - Manchester is domestic, I would not have received the full baggage allowance.
The obvious solution would have been to begin the journey Exeter - Paris on Flybe, and then continue direct with Air France. That routing would have been fine, but is only offered on one ticket in Business class!
As I mentioned earlier, my research was in April 2009 so things may have improved since then, but somehow I doubt it!
They certainly don't make it easy. I travel a lot for work so thought I was up on this, but yesterday's panic was probably me overthinking after some problems with work flights lately due to snow. I emailed Flybe and got written confirmation confirming what you said yesterday. It is crazy though that the domestic allowance is applied as, and I quote, "the international carrier's allowance applies".0 -
I've just discovered that even if the journey consists of of just one flight, the codeshare rule still applies: if you book with Air France, you get Air France's baggage policy. I just booked a return flight for two in December from Southampton to Paris. This is a FlyBe route but it's codeshared with Air France. The FlyBe website quoted me £301; the Air France website quoted me £250 for the same flights... but the Air France quote included checked baggage of up to 23Kg each. Add the baggage charge on the FlyBe site and the total is £353. Choose to book via debit card (free with Air France) and the FlyBe price is now £375. So booking a FlyBe flight through Air France has saved me £120, or 32%!
I double-checked the baggage allowance with the Air France customer services people: they confirmed that if you book through Air France you automatically get up to 23Kg checked baggage included in the price, regardless of FlyBe's own policy.0
