I think it's because they're 'common'. I have a beautiful black and white cat, I wouldn't call him common or plain at all!!!

It's like black dogs, they're the most common ones in rescues. My black GSD is a stunner and is always commented on, I just don't understand it!

To the original poster. We waited 3 months before we got 2 new cats. Unfortunately, there are many discarded in the New Year when people have lost interest in their Christmas present. Why anybody would want to give an animal as a Christmas present I'll never know.

I think with black cats it's to do with superstition perhaps? fear they will bring bad luck? And of course black cats are always associated with witches. My two were black... suited me fine ;)

I used to have 2 cats. The first one was bought for me by my then partner when he was 8 weeks old and was bought from a pet shop . That was 20 years ago and we didn't know any better. Anyway, I lost him last Wednesday when he was pts because of multiple health problems.

My other cat I got from a cat and dog shelter branch when she was 4 months old. She was adopted when my other cat was about 3 months old. Sadly, I lost her 5 years ago.

I miss my cat terribly, but then it's not even a week since he died so quite normal, but at the moment I'm not planning to adopt another one, although my dd is nagging me constantly as she has never known life without a cat.

If my dd get the better of me (teenagers have special nagging powers haven't they?) I'll try and adopt a cat from the "difficult to find a home for" range ie an older cat and possibly a black cat.

I am so sorry for your loss.I lost Orbit on a Friday & had to go out & get a rescue cat that day,the home felt so empty, lifeless, without him.
Please, give a rescue cat a chance of a forever home,The are so many that need love.

Daisy doesn't have a bad bone in her body, she prefers to spend her day on my lap asleep, sitting on the window ledge or eating..
Pets are for life & so many people cave into crimbo wishes for a pet without thinking thru the financial & moral obligations of having a pet.
While I've been out of work,I've seen me spending my last quid on Daisy for food,I'd rather starve before her!

Felix was from the local animal charity and we were told he was 6 years old at the time. We've now had him nearly 3 years.

However, our vet thinks he is a little bit older than that at about 10 years old now. He is poorly at the moment but an angel nonetheless.

Thanks Spike. I know what you mean about the home feeling so empty. For me it's at bedtime that it's worse. He would always, the minute I got to bed, join me and settle on the cover next to me, unless I was reading a book and then he would try and read it with me :D

At the moment I feel too raw to think about rehoming, and risking putting myself through that pain again. Anyway, I'm not sure I would be allowed to: I live in a flat and work nearly full time (although working full time is necessary really to be able to afford the vet's bills )

Don't just think about risking putting yourself through pain when you lose a beloved pet. Think of the love and companionship you gained from having that pet, and how nice it would be to give a poor old rescue moggy that love and companionship. Even if they are only with us a short time, the lovely memories stay in the heart forever.

Hope you get another best pal soon, best wishes. RosieX:A

Our first cat was 9 months old when we got her. Her previous owner had her from birth and had all her photos as very young on disc. She had to be rehomed to us because the owners son was allergic to the cat. Our second cat was 3 months old and our neighbours had bought her, decided they couldnt cope with a kitten and a baby and I offered to take her off their hands. Both cats are darlings and as I have four children, i am glad i got them both young to get used to being around kids.

    You're quite welcome.

I live in a flat too but am out of work until Jan at the moment.Daisy is a house cat & her breed is 'British Short Hair' which are, apparently, low energy cats.:D
She's very laid back (horizontal in fact!:rotfl:) & such a little lady..

I know what you mean about vet bills,Orbit was at his worst when I was out of work mid 2008 & I ran up a bill of over £400 with his treatment.Thankfully I had my TA wage to pay for it from my annual bounty.

Good luck in whatever you decide.I know it took me weeks to get over Orbit to an extent I could go into the garden, where he's laid to rest wrapped in his blanket.Even going into the kitchen overlooking him bought me to threaders.I still talk to him even now.To me he wasn't just 'a cat',he was my best friend as I don't have much family left.
    Take care,
    Mervyn.
