Also the rules in england were created from experience and things going wrong. Whether they apply legally or not where you are it's still a good idea to follow them to ensure you end up with a working installation.

By the way.....an installation shouldn't rely on wind being present. If that's the case then the flue needs to be taller.

I don't think it is unreasonable to assume the person is in the same country as you seen as nobody seems to display their location in their profile.

There was no mention that the guy was from NI;)
    lol

so cos he didnt say Im in NI he has to have English laws thrown at him??

And then have the wife of one hetas fitter post that the other hetas fitter was the only one who contributed what was needed to the thread???

Many a post has jawsjawdad said hes from NI

    HETAS means diddly squat here

Theres posters from all over the world posting on here. Just because England was once an empire it doesnt mean its rules and regs apply to everyone nowdays

So wind yer necks in on rules and regs unless you know you are talking to someone in England who is governed by the same rules

Last I looked this was a UK based site and Hetas isnt recognised all other the uk

And guess what - we dont have corgi ( or whatever they call themselves nowadays ) fitters either

Since when was the UK only one country?

And why do you think your rules are so bloody superior?

yep - my flue needed to be taller - worked fine for best part of a year then bang - suddenly it stopped working till we added another half meter - you telling me that you being a Hetas fitter would have known that right away? Even though our flu was well over the ridge and higher then the resisting chimney which has a fantastic draw?

Told you before about assuming all poster were in England - we are not - many from Scotland, NI and Ireland, as well as France ( and other EU countries) and Ive even seen a poster here from Turkey

Do you have a vent in the room where your stove is suki?

Getting a bit bored of your thread hijacking and pointless rants. You've contributed nothing towards helping the OP whereas everyone else has.

My posts were pretty informative. I've pointed out many issues with the install. If these are corrected the stove will work. Pretty simple.

All you've suggested is that it's because there's no wind. This is not true. Flues shouldn't rely on wind to work and shouldn't be affected by wind. That's why different chimney pots are avilable to stop flues drawing excessivley when windy.

Suki, Check the vent, maybe a big chip dropped off your shoulder and is blocking it.

As regards the op, I'm not sure whether smoke is entering the room from the stove, or just the smell. I don't get smoke from mine, but I certainly get a lovely not-excessive wiff of burning coal or wood when the door is opened - never thought anything of it. I'd be worried if I got smoke bellowing out, but not worried about the smell signifying anything amiss.

I'd say you're almost bound to get (literally) microscopic leakage sufficient to detect a smell, especially as the sense is hightened by expectation of the smell.

Yes I do, we followed all the building regs that apply here in NI when fitting our stove and we have the air vent at skirting level and not a million miles from the stove. We still found we needed that extra half meter from a straight up flu when for best part of a year it worked the best

And I did help him - I put him in touch with a guy who could help if he had no joy from his own installers. A guy that has many years of fitting and installing stoves and oil boilers and maintaining them, not some outfit thats gone from installing open fires to stoves ( cos of demand) and know not a lot about anything much

I didnt say that cos there is no wind there is no draw - Im saying that because theres not an breath of wind here and hasnt for the past week where we usually have gales its possibly the reason why now all of a sudden hes found there to be problems with the install - those that weren't apparent in the past few months

No where have I contradicted the advice that the install was iffy,I just said stop shouting hetas because it doesn't mean a thing here
  • Okay, you win.
  • Thank you all for the helpful advice re the problems with my stove. I'm having the flue redone in the new year to give as unrestricted a gas flow as possible. In my stoves location it is not possible for the flue to exit the house without using bends, but hopefully these can be kept to a minimum. As the room where the stove is located is less than 5 meters high to the ridge tiles, I am quite restricted to the height of my flue. At the moment my flue extends 600mm above the ridge, and I would be concerned about extending it unsupported.
Anyway, have to be positive about getting it sorted, and enjoying the pleasures of a good going stove.
Happy Christmas to you all from Northern Ireland, and hopefully a cosy New Year.

Suki, keep the logs dry and the stove hot there in north antrim and thanks again for your help.

    Paul
