Hi recently had a multifuel stove fitted (Aarrow ecoburn 9) and have noticed when I open door to put some fuel, normally coal on, that the smell of fumes comes out into the room. Is this normal or do I have a problem? Only get smell when door is open.

Are you pulling the door open quickly?

Try turning handle and slowly opening the door a touch to make the pressure in the stove the same as in the room.

If you open the door too quickly it gets sucked into the room.

If that fails then you may have a down draught issue.

Is the chimney lined? Cowl on top etc?
  • Yes stove is free standing, just over 1.2 meters of black flue pipe from top of stove, then 90 degree bend out through wall. Horizontal section including black to Class 1 adaptor approx 600mm, then 90 degree Class1 into Class1 insulated flue with rain cap on top. Total height above stove about 4.5 meters. Weather is very calm with little or no wind, so not sure down draughts would be the cause. When I open door very slowly, smoke just rolls out of the opening. Have been really looking forward to using our new stove, especially with this cold weather, but dread opening the door. I know there are guys on this forum who really know their stoves, so hoping they can come up with a remedy.

    Thanks

If smoke is escaping to that degree it sounds like you have an installation problem - though trying to diagnose exactly what from via a foum post is next to impossible.. As you say it's a new stove, have you tried contacting the installer? It's his responsibility to make sure the stove is safely working.

Sounds like there are many issue with the install. 90 deg bends are not allowed in a flue system. Horizontal runs of more than 6" are not allowed also. Single skin flue should not pass through walls............The horizontal section is likely to get blocked from soot. We wouldn't even introduce 30 or 45 degree bends on a flue height of only 4.5m.....never mind 90 deg bends.

It all sounds incredibly bodgy and I'm assuming it wasn't a professional install? If it was they need shopping to HETAS if they're HETAS registered and Trading Standards if they're not.

The remedy would be to rip it all out and start from scratch and do it properly.
  • sounds like a lack of flue drawing to me. if that makes sense mate. im sure someone with the technical know how on this will be along.

Theres not a drop of wind about which is why the draw has been exposed as being so bad. Usually as you know we have winds, high winds and even higher winds which is prolly why no problem has been detected before. We ourselves, even with no bends or angles or anything else obstructing the draw had to raise our double lined flu half a metre this year because we too were getting smoke rolling in a while back.

Our next door neight has just had to have his ripped out and redone as he too had a dodgy install - and now he needs a new stove on top of everything

Worth giving Philip Maurice a call - hes on the Frosses road - knows he stuff - if you get no joy from your installers

Sounds a bit of a mess all round. Did you get a compliance certificate and data plate with the job? As it isnt compliant.

Ah, just seen CRPhillips has basically told you what to do :)
  • Thanks everyone for your comments, as I live in NI the HETAS certification does not appear to apply here. I am getting back to my installer today and hopefully get it sorted out. Suki if I have no joy with my installer, I will give Philip Maurice a call.

One of these days it may just sink in that the rules for England are not the same as the rules here
