Best thing to feed my cat

Is there a good way to calculate what to feed a cat? I am planning on getting a cat soon and plan to feed Applaws dry food with supplemented with a good quality wet food once every few days. There are instructions on the packaging as to how much dry food to feed but I know with dog food the manufacturers recommendations are too much - from memory my parents halved the recommended amount of dog food they fed their dogs from the packet (vet told them to do this). Is cat food the same? Also how do you work out how much to substitute between wet and dry food?
ThanksThe early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese :cool:0 -
I feed Persian

But I will be changing to dental when I run out

OP Royal Canin is the only cat food I use.
I found it to have no effect whatsoever (except make me much poorer) - recommend normal quality dried food & Logic gel applied on gums.0 -

I feed mine Arden Grange Light as he's a bit lazy and needs fewer calories. I did try him on Orijen and he did like it (and he lost weight - it was like he was doing Atkins I guess!) but he did get a urine infection and even had blood in his wee. It could be just a coincidence but the Orijen was the only change so I won't risk it again.
He eats mainly dry but is a good drinker and has perfect teeth for a 7 year old cat. No brown or tartar build up - they are lovely and white and his breath doesn't smell at all - thank goodness!0 -

According to the research I've found it was previously thought that it was the make up of the dry food that caused the problem, but now it's thought that it's simply the lack of moisture which is the big player. See catinfo.org for good information regarding it.
I've never been able to feed the tripod Kitekat - well I can, and she'll eat it, but it inevitably reappears on my carpet again 30 minutes later. Same with all that "tier" of catfoods - she'll wolf them down like me confronted with a tin of Quality Street green triangles... then upchucktacular. I rapidly learnt that I couldn't run out of catfood and buy from the corner shop or I'd be up to my eyes in carpet cleaner later that day.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -

Orbit (RIP) was the same with Whiskas.A few time's I got up bleary eye'd & trod in a puddle of cat sick on the way to my morning coffee fix!
So I changed him to Purely.0 -
my bean (6 months) gets half a pouch of tesco premium chunks in gravy (prefers that to the jelly) in the morning, then dry food gets topped up when needed, again tesco's own premium stuff he likes the purpley one, think it's duck and some sort of veg flavoured. FIL brought round some dry food when we ran out, and it was whiskas senior (doh!) but he doesn't like it anyway. thinking i'll maybe up him to a whole pouch of wet food a day when he's a bit older, but he loves his crunchies and is a very healthy and happy kitty (apart from the epilepsy, but there's nothing diet can do for that unfortunately)
the cat's previous owner gave him cow's milk from when he was only a tote, so he can drink it fine with no bad tummy, so he'd get a wee saucer of milk once a fortnight. he also takes two tablets a day, the first gets squished in and gobbled up with the wet food, second gets rolled up in some cheese, or hidden in cooked meat, just depends what's in the fridge.
for treats he'll eat anything, the sound of me shaking the whiskas temptations pots always make him run into the kitchen from wherever he is, but he likes the chewy sticks too. OH would also give him a bit of sandwich meat or sardines if he's having them for lunch on his days off (once or twice a week)0 -
I gave scribble a sachet of Applaws chicken and ostrich today broken down into 2 meals. He woofed it down and licked the plate. And I swear it looked so good I was tempted to eat it myself! 85p well appreciated. Chicken and pumpkin bought for later this week.0

i recently had abit of a budget change and looked into cheap but decent cat food.
as a result i have changed my 2 over to butchers classic and they love it.
costs approx £2.75 for 6 cans and it is recommended to feed a can a day per cat.
(though my 2 share 1 can a day and have james wellbeloved as well)
it is a good wet food as it is grain, soya and sugar free and according to info from petforums it is 60-70% meat which is good for the price.
another bonus is that most supermarkets sell it0
