Snow on car

Just to let you know a friend got a £60 fine and 3 points for driving with snow on her car roof.
If you are able to travel anywhere, it may be worth getting the snow off!

This is NOT true - this is merely an urban legend which is doing the rounds at the moment.

Although obviously it is a wise idea to clear your car of snow before driving.
  • Technically it could happen as it is illegal. If the PSNI did this it would be a PR disaster.
  • i think they should be doing this, some idiot with foot of snow on top of the car came round a bend at traffic lights on sat sending a load of snow onto my windscreen, thankfully i was sitting at the lights at the time but if i had of been moving i wouldnt have seen a thing - very irresponsible thing to do, it takes 2 seconds to clear car with a brush!
  • This has been taken from the Highway Code.

    Before you set off
    • you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
    • you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
    • make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
    • remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
    • check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted
    [Laws CUR reg 30, RVLR reg 23, VERA sect 43 & RV(DRM)R reg 11]

I have seen many cars driving with at least 15 cms of snow on the roof and illegible number plates.

  • While no one would doubt it is illegal and dangerous I would be very wary that it may be used as a money making scheme just like some of the speed traps. Is there right of appeal? The line "remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users" is very ropey. Like a said this could be a PR disaster for the PSNI unless they are pulling people over with a mountain of snow on there car!

PSNI were on radio ulster this morning, there is no law which allows them to issue fixed penalty notices or penalty points for having snow on your roof, indeed the office said if anyone has had such a ticket send it to him and he would get it sorted - HOWEVER they said if you are driving with snow on the roof and it is felt if it is flying off your roof and causing a hazard to other drivers they could in theory do you for inconsiderate driving

as D.A. says urban legend - which is continually being regurgitated via email and text at the minute

It is of course worth clearing all the snow from your car where possible.

The number of people who don't even bother to clear snow from their lights and then wonder why they don't seem so powerful amazes me.
  • There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

This rubbish has been firing about Facebook all week.

I would think the police have a lot more critical things to be at currently than chasing snowy cars.
Accidents, drink driving, road rage, pub fights - all those usual Christmas customs.
